Description Intern: Software Engineer - JR \| Summer 2026 Start Innovative Defense Technologies(IDT),provider of automated software testing, data analysis, and cybersecurity solutions for complex, mission-critical systems in the US Department of Defense (DOD), is seeking a Software Engineer Intern to be based in our Mt. Laurel, NJ or Arlington, VA offices. This Software Engineer will work with a fast-paced team of mission-focused engineers to solve some of the Navy's toughest challenges. Initiative, creativity, reliability, and efficient teamwork will be required to successfully deliver innovative solutions in this dynamic customer space. Overview: IDT seeks to add a Software Engineer Intern responsible for designing, developing, and integrating software solutions across IDT's Warfare Systems business area. The primary role of the Software Engineer Intern is to build high-quality, innovative, and fully performing software which integrates with other system components. The Software Engineer will be working with various Warfare Systems customers to gather user requirements, defining system functionality, and writing code in various languages, like Java, C++, Python, and JavaScript. You will work with other software engineers, systems engineers, integration engineers, and subject matter experts to deliver robust technical solutions to Navy customers IDT's Summer Internship Program offers students the opportunity to learn from experts and perform meaningful work in a professional work environment. In this program, students can expect: A 10-12-week program; up to 40 hours per week Competitive pay Individual mentoring Valuable training A supportive culture Social events and team-building activities *All applicants must be able to obtain/maintain an active U.S. Security Clearance.* Responsibilities Include: Design, develop, document, and test software code written in various languages Integrate software components into a complex software development environment Ensure adherence to industry standards pertaining to security, orthodox programming paradigms, and performance requirements Understand and interact with complex DoD software systems Work with small cross-site teams of software and/or systems engineers Collaborate with team members to peer-review architecture design, system requirements, and implemented code Minimum Required Qualifications: Currently enrolled in an undergraduate or post graduate degree program majoring in software engineering, computer science, computer engineering, electrical engineering, data science, cyber security, mathematics, or aeronautical engineering Required skills: Familiarity with the software development process (requirements through deployment) Ability to design, develop, and analyze software systems Ability to model/code/test algorithms in C++, Python, Java, or JavaScript Familiarity DEVSECOPS software development Familiarity with Kubernetes and application orchestration Ability to perform many concurrent assignments and determine the need for changing priorities Preferred skills: Experience with cloud computing, virtualization, or containerization technologies Experience with machine learning and/or artificial intelligence Experience with testing frameworks including unit testing and interface testing Competencies: Problem-solving skills with the ability to navigate ambiguous situations Excellence in technical communication with peers and non-technical cohorts Excellence in technical communication with peers and non-technical cohorts Ability to work closely with Program Managers and Chief Engineers to document, manage and communicate systems and software requirements Attention to detail Show initiative, creativity, reliability, teamwork Strong organization and planning skills Solid analytical abilities, coupled with a strong sense of ownership, urgency, and drive EEO Statement: IDT is an Equal Opportunity employer.
