POSITION SPECIFICS

A postdoctoral position is available in the clinical microbiology laboratory at the Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center and College of Medicine. The Hershey Medical Center clinical microbiology laboratory serves patients across the central Pennsylvania area and specializes in infectious disease diagnostic testing in the areas of bacteriology, mycology, mycobacteriology, immunology, and molecular infectious disease testing. The qualified applicant must have been awarded a PhD within the last 2 years and state their interest in pursuing a career in clinical microbiology to support patient care and diagnostic test implementation. This post-doctoral fellowship is intended to train and prepare the applicant to compete for CPEP (ASM) accredited two-year fellowships and to pursue board certification in medical and public health microbiology. In addition to CPEP preparation this position will also aid the clinical laboratory in test validations/verifications, test implementation, quality assurance,and quality improvement projects. The applicant will gain exposure to infectious disease testing, laboratory operations, clinical decision making, teaching and translational research projects.

Experience in microbial culture techniques, molecular amplification platforms I procedures and immunological assays is strongly recommended. The applicant is expected to assist the clinical microbiology laboratory in ongoing collaborative studies and clinical trials of diagnostic tests. Applicants should have a strong understanding of compliance and security of protected health information, working knowledge of Microsoft Office products to include spreadsheet and database analysis and possess good scientific writing skills. Applicants will be expected to work in an organized manner and be able to function as part of a multi-disciplinary team of clinical laboratory scientists, information management professionals, clinicians, infection prevention practitioners, commercial diagnostic partners, and basic science researchers. Applicants should expect to perform the tasks required to generate peer-reviewed manuscripts and abstracts accepted to regional/scientific conferences during the training/research program.
