Position Overview
| Essential Job Duties |
The Small Animal Emergency and Critical Care (
ECC) and Extracorporeal Therapy (
ECT) Services at the NC State Veterinary Hospital are accepting applications for a 12-24 month Fellowship in Advanced
ECC and
ECT, depending on the fellow's preference/interest.
The duties of the Fellow will include:
- 50 - 60% extracorporeal therapy duty: primary responsibility is management of elective and emergency extracorporeal sessions. During extracorporeal week duty, the Fellow is on-call (7 days/week) for any emergency extracorporeal therapy session.
- Primary case responsibility will be maintained by the primary specialty service (usually Internal Medicine or ECC service); however, in certain circumstances, the ECT fellow may serve as the primary clinician for these cases.
- 40 - 50% ER/ICU duty: The Fellow will primarily receive emergency cases, supervise house officers in the ER and ICU services, and/or work in the hospitalist service, depending on the qualifications and previous experiences of the fellow.
- During the primary receiving or hospitalist duty, the fellow will take care of emergency and hospitalized cases as a primary clinician during weekdays or weekends. During the supervisory duty, the fellow will work directly with ECC residents and rotating interns and supervise the ICU and Emergency/Triage services during weekdays or weekends.
- The successful candidate will be board eligible or credentialed by the ACVECC. Time for board preparation (up to 8 weeks) is available for board eligible candidates.
Additional benefits provided to the incumbent include:
- Registration to online hemodialysis academy (3 classes/week x 50 weeks). The program will sponsor cost of the course ($1,500).
- Fellow will be eligible for 2-4 weeks of professional development.

| Other Work/Responsibilities |
- The Small Animal ECC service at NC State Veterinary Hospital is a busy service that includes 8 ACVECC Diplomates, 9 ECC residents, and over 20 certified veterinary technicians.
- The ECT service currently consists of 2 founding members (1 ACVECC and 1 ACVIM) of the American College of Veterinary Nephrology and Urology (ACVNU), ACVNU board-eligible faculty members (2 ACVECC and 2 ACVIM), 2 ACVNU residents (1 ACVECC and 1 ACVIM), and 2 ECT fellows (2 ACVECC).
- The successful candidate for the Advanced ECC/ECT Fellowship is expected to actively participate in the sections, attend resident training rounds and reading groups, and contribute to excellence in patient care within the ECT and ECC services.
