The Department of Biochemistry in the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences (CALS) is a modern academic department with emphases in cellular regulation, molecular genetics, protein structure, hormone action, virology, and developmental biology. Contributions by the department's researchers have dramatically changed our understanding of life and rank among the highlights of biochemistry to date. For over a century, the department's reputation for such research excellence has attracted outstanding undergraduate and graduate students, postdoctoral researchers, faculty, and staff who collectively push the boundaries of modern-day biochemistry.

The Biochemistry Department Administrator, under the supervision of the Department Chair, is instrumental in the successful oversight and management of administrative functions supporting the department's research, teaching, and service programs. This position provides professional administrative leadership and is responsible for the day-to-day management of departmental and academic operations in the following areas: administrative services; research/teaching operations/support; faculty and staff personnel, finance/budget; facilities; graduate student appointments; international and student issues, including visas; event planning; and other business operations.

The Biochemistry Department Administrator works with individuals in business services, human resources, educational administration, information technology, facilities, management, outreach/communications, administrative program support, and sponsored projects/contract administration. The Administrator oversees compliance with a wide range of policies, procedures, and regulations of the university, affiliated organizations and external agencies; assures a high-functioning operational infrastructure to support the department's research, education, and service missions, coordinates and oversees personnel transactions, and maintains financial management reporting and control systems, and monitors expenditures.

This position plays a critical role in the establishment and enforcement of department and college policy and compliance of University, State, and Federal policy, and works alongside the Department Chair and faculty as a consultant on and implementation of departmental priorities. This position provides leadership in strategic planning, optimization of processes, and implementation of best practices, working in partnership with the Department Chair, and key departmental committees and CALS Administration.

This position supervises and directs the administrative support staff in the department including the Financial Manager, Administrative Manager, and Facilities Manager.

Key Job Responsibilities:
  • Exercises supervisory authority, including hiring, transferring, suspending, promoting, managing conduct and performance, discharging, assigning, rewarding, disciplining, and/or approving hours worked of at least 2.0 full-time equivalent (FTE) employees
  • Provides leadership and administrative oversight of basic and translational research programs including staffing, compliance, fiscal, information technology (IT), and facility needs
  • Provides leadership for the strategic and short-term planning processes, as well as obtaining and validating data needed for strategic decision-making
  • Provides leadership in developing and administering budgets. Oversees financial operations including grants, contract, and other funds to ensure adherence to prudent and generally accepted accounting practices, and compliance with Federal, State, university, and sponsor rules, regulations, laws and bylaws
  • Provides leadership, guidance, and management of the department's research, teaching and service programs, and staff to ensure efficient and effective operations
  • Provides leadership for faculty recruitment, evaluation, development, and promotion processes
  • Provides leadership and oversight of training programs
  • Provides oversight and management of office and research space on and off campus, department information systems, and regional network development
  • Responsible for communication and marketing of department activities, accomplishments, and department philanthropic activities including meeting with and engaging potential donors

Compensation:

The minimum salary for this position is $118,000. However, final salary will depend on experience and qualifications.

Required Qualifications:

Significant experience in all the areas listed below: Response should include the type of setting (i.e., private, public, academic, other), where the experience was earned and the scope of the responsibilities involved.



  • Professional leadership, management, and oversight of business and/or administrative operations in a medium to large organization (Specify the type of administrative responsibilities and size of the organization)

  • Experience developing, revising, analyzing, interpretating, implementing, training, and communicating administrative policies and procedures (Specify the type of policies)

  • Experience with financial and budgetary management and implementation (Specify the financial and budgetary responsibilities)

  • Experience with personnel management and oversight (Specify the personnel functional areas)

  • Supervisory/management experience, managing, directing, and supervising staff (Specify the supervisory and employee's oversight responsibilities)

Note: Qualified candidates will have extensive experience, including formal supervision, in all the areas listed under the Required Qualifications section.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Working knowledge and experience with administrative policies and procedures in an academic/public sector setting
  • Working knowledge and experience with budget, finance, or grant processes and systems or other comparable financial platforms in an academic/public sector setting
  • Working knowledge and experience with personnel processes and systems in an academic/public sector setting

Education:

Bachelor's degree preferred in business, finance, or related field
