Application Deadline Date: December 19, 2025

The Department of Family Medicine and Community Health at the University of Minnesota Medical School is seeking 2-3 full-time Postdoctoral Fellows in Primary Care Behavioral Health for a two-year fellowship beginning September 2026.

This unique fellowship prepares the next generation of primary care psychologists to become leaders in integrated behavioral health. Fellows gain the knowledge and skills to support and empower vulnerable populations while thriving in academic healthcare environments.
Our department's mission is to empower patients, families, and communities - promoting equity and social justice by providing accessible, high-quality mental health care for all.

Fellowship Overview:

Fellows are based in family medicine residency clinics, which are certified Patient-Centered Medical Homes serving diverse, urban, and underserved populations. These clinics care for patients with a wide range of medical and psychosocial needs, including depression, anxiety, trauma, health behavior change, chronic pain, and somatization.
In addition to providing direct clinical care, fellows are trained as medical educators and play a vital role in teaching family medicine residents. Fellows help train future physicians to communicate effectively and provide evidence-based behavioral health care. Teaching opportunities include:

  • Reviewing recorded patient encounters
  • Coaching residents on communication and behavioral health interventions
  • Leading interdisciplinary team meetings
  • Delivering classroom and didactic sessions

Fellows receive individual, group, and peer supervision, and participate in a range of didactic and interdisciplinary learning experiences alongside family medicine residents. Training includes psychiatric management in primary care, population health, complex care management, and resilience.

Fellowship Activities
Fellows will:

  • Provide evidence-based psychological services in primary care settings
  • Implement behavioral health programs supporting population health and quality improvement
  • Work collaboratively on interprofessional teams (including physicians, pharmacists, and care coordinators)
  • Precept and teach family medicine residents on topics such as patient-centered communication, behavior change, and mental health care
  • Contribute to behavioral medicine education across the residency program
  • Complete a scholarly project advancing integrated behavioral health

About the Department

The Department of Family Medicine and Community Health at the University of Minnesota was created more than 50 years ago in response to a legislative mandate to train primary care physicians. Since then, we have been leaders in transforming the specialty through education, research, and patient care. We are the academic sponsor of seven family medicine residencies-five in the Twin Cities, two in Greater Minnesota. We are involved in medical student education activities across the Medical School's two campuses: Twin Cities and Duluth. We sponsor five fellowship programs-sports medicine, hospice and palliative medicine, behavioral medicine, clinical informatics, and human sexuality- and offer continuing medical education opportunities. We are regularly among the top National Institutes of Health-funded family medicine departments. Our faculty are actively researching health disparities, healthcare delivery, and population health.
