The Food Safety Manager is tasked with staying abreast of the requirements, regulations and developments related to quality assurance and food safety as it applies to the food distribution industry. The position is responsible for ensuring that the processes, procedures, documentation and training within McLane are adequate to maintain food safety and quality from receiving through delivery. The person in this position will be expected to provide hands-on leadership, support and training to field personnel and will operate as the primary contact with distribution centers. It is
essential that the person possess not only the technical knowledge, but also the interpersonal and leadership skills to influence and lead change.

  • Pay rate: $85,000 to $100,000 per year.
  • This role is also eligible to participate in the annual incentive plan with a target incentive of 12.5% of your base annual salary.

What you'll do as a Food Safety Manager:

  • Act as content expert for quality assurance. Must understand the QA requirements of McLane, all customers and relevant government entities.
  • Also required to follow and understand trends in the industry and FSMA to ensure McLane is prepared and acting proactively to anticipate new requirements.
  • Develop, document and maintain the procedures and training materials required to ensure compliance with QA requirements. This will include the McLane Food Safety and QA Manuals.
  • Provide QA guidance and training for the management personnel in the distribution centers. In addition to training materials and documentation, this will include performing mock audits, responding to questions as they arise and identifying/sharing best practices across all distribution centers.
  • Provide/maintain/monitor training materials for all distribution center personnel as needed to meet McLane, government, and customer QA requirements.
  • Interact effectively with QA personnel from the customers, third party audit firms, and regulatory agencies to answer questions and resolve issues.
  • Work with industry experts and field personnel to identify solutions for QA-related issues as they arise.
  • Devise and oversee execution of tests and studies as necessary to better understand issues and validate solutions.
  • Identify any tools or system enhancements needed to meet QA requirements and oversee the associated specification, development and deployment.
  • Possess a solid understanding of distribution operations and be able to assist with issues that arise from catastrophic events, during daily operations and with managing change in the business or methods.
  • Provide hands-on assistance to operations seeking to improve performance by identifying underlying causes of issues, developing recommendations to address those problems, working with local management and the Field Directors of Operations to develop overall action plans and providing training and follow-up on the floor to support their execution.
  • Provide onsite management and support for projects, manage National Programs.
  • Provide 24x7 support to field operations for issues involving the food safety and/or inventory, receiving and sales systems.
  • Assist with various other department support activities including collecting time studies for labor standards, conducting full inventory counts, performing mock QA audits and assessing process/system compliance in daily operations.
  • Concurrently balance and manage multiple priorities and projects.
  • Conduct annual visits and internal audits for facilities to ensure food safety compliance.
  • Manage temperature monitoring/non-compliance loads for inbound and outbound cold chain management.

Qualifications you'll bring as a Food Safety Manager:

  • Degree in Food Science, Business, or related field in food safety is desired.
  • Solid understanding of operations is required with a minimum of three to five years of field experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to quickly learn and master new concepts, processes and systems.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills to build concurrence and drive change.
  • Strong writing and presentation skills.
  • Certification in HACCP, Seafood HACCP, Food Defense, PCQI, Sanitation and GMP's
  • This position requires the ability to read, write, and understand English at a level sufficient to perform job-related tasks effectively and safely. This includes understanding work instructions, safety protocols, and communications essential to the role. The requirement is directly related to the nature of the job and ensures compliance with workplace safety and operational standards.

Working Conditions:

  • Remote, Office, and encompasses all areas of a Distribution Center.
  • This position may require work in hot and cold temperature extremes and exposure to dust, dirt, fumes,
    noise, potentially harmful chemicals, solvents and components, and working in close to proximity to other
    teammates.
  • This position requires 60% to 80% travel.
