National Grid is hiring a Designer (Electrical Planning and Design Engineering), Electrical Engineering for Massachusetts. This is a Hybrid Role - Must live within a commutable distance to Northboro, MA.

Job Purpose

National Grid is seeking a Senior Designer to join our Electric Transmission Line Engineering Department at the Northboro, MA location.

Key Accountabilities
  • Prepare, maintain, and revise drawings throughout the project lifecycle. Examples include plan drawings, cross-sections, staking diagrams, phasing diagrams, hardware/structure/foundation details.
  • Develop as-built records.
  • Work with Engineers and undertake tasks of varying complexity.
  • Support the Inspection and Maintenance Program. Tasks include initiating, tracking, and closing work orders as well as preparing Design and Closeout Packages as necessary.
  • Produce designs based on applicable design codes, engineering procedures, and sound safety practices.
  • Occasionally inspect assets and collect information in the field.
  • Specify, order, and coordinate material delivery (inventory and purchase orders).
  • Work collaboratively with diverse project teams including Project Management, Construction, Environmental, and Real Estate.
  • Develop relationships with internal and external stakeholders in order to obtain and share information that will benefit National Grid and our customers.
  • Support permitting efforts.
  • Assist in varying capacities during storm/major event restoration activities.
  • Investigate the adoption of new and innovative technologies.
Qualifications
  • Associate or Bachelor Degree in Civil Engineering / Technology or Drafting.
  • 2 or more years professional experience in an engineering field, preferably transmission line engineering.
  • Experience with drafting software including: AutoCAD and MicroStation
  • Working knowledge of industry standards, safety standards, and current design codes, especially the National Electrical Safety Code (NESC).
  • Proficient Microsoft Office computer skills (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Working knowledge of ESRI/GIS.
  • Knowledge of National Grid's business operations.
  • Knowledge of relevant industry practice, standards and legislation including technical advancements.

Knowledge of the following is preferred:

  • Fundamentals of civil engineering
  • Transmission design tools: PLS CADD, PLS POLE, MAXIMO, and STORMS
  • Tools and techniques to develop drawings
  • Materials used in construction
