Position Title: Christmas Tree Attendant

Corps/Department: The Salvation Army, Gateway Corps, Ketchikan

Reports To: Corps Officer

FSLA Status: Seasonal Full-Time/ 40 hours per week

November 24 to December 20; Non-Exempt

Position Summary:

The Christmas Tree Attendant is responsible to the Salvation Army Gateway Corps. Their primary duty is to operate Winter Christmas Tree Sales Fundraiser. This includes operating the point-of-sale system, checking out customers in a timely and courteous fashion, and assisting customers in selecting and loading trees. They will help to keep the sales area clean and neat, performing basic janitorial duties and caring for product. They will be expected to put up all sales and marketing sign. As the "face" of the fundraiser, they will be expected to fulfill the role of a brand ambassador for The Salvation Army. Finally, they are to aid in maintaining a safe, positive, and professional Christian environment for customers and coworkers in support of the values of Jesus Christ and The Salvation Arm

Essential Functions:



  1. Ensure the health and safety of customers while maintaining a clean and safe work area.
  2. Communicating with customers, supervisors, and co-workers.
  3. Keep sales area, backroom, and other work environments clean and free from potentially dangerous clutter.
  4. Maintain and safely operate a chainsaw.
  5. Safely lift and load trees weighing up to 75lbs onto customer vehicles ensuring there are tied down securely.
  6. Use equipment and systems such as a computer, point of sale system, phone, timeclock.
  7. Show up on time and be flexible with hours should additional help be needed.
  8. Maintain cash register, checking out customers and providing quality customer service.
  9. Assist in all cleanups throughout corps, and warehouse areas
  10. Counting money, giving correct change, other basic cash register skills
  11. Maintain good morale while speaking with and working around customers.
  12. Attend trainings as required including but not limited to Protect the Mission - child safety training, CPR certification and The Salvation Army fleet safety training.
  13. Be willing to attend all orientation meetings/classes
  14. Make every effort to get along with co-workers not causing friction or rifts in staff.
  15. Maintain professional appearance adhering to dress code policies.
  16. Other duties as assigned by the Store Manager and/or Corps Officers


Work Environment:

Work in the holiday warehouse is performed in a heated and ventilated setting. Noise level is low. Brief exposure to cold and inclement weather when loading trees.

Minimum Qualifications:



  1. Minimum one (1) year work experience in any field. (Sales/Retail preferred)
  2. Ability to complete any and all assigned trainings.
  3. Have the ability to work well independently and in a detailed, professional and courteous manner.
  4. Have the ability to work on a dynamic high performing small team.
  5. Have the ability to work independently to meet goals set by management.


Skills, Knowledge & Abilities:



  1. Be a fast learner and able to keep pace with multiple priorities.
  2. Be flexible and open to new ideas, concepts, and ways of doing things.
  3. Ability to perform basic math without the use of a calculator or other device.
  4. Ability to provide positive customer service.


Physical Demands:

Ability to walk, stand, bend, squat, climb, kneel, run, jump, and twist. Maintain the ability to grasp, push, pull objects such as boxes or furniture, reach overhead, and carry store supplies. Maintain the ability to operate a computer, telephone, and similar technologies, Ability to lift up to 75 lbs. Ability to learn and adhere to proper lifting techniques, always wearing a back brace when lifting heavy items.

Software-related Skills: Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook familiarity preferred. Working knowledge of integrated database applications and ability to use new software programs with basic training.

Language Skills: Must be able to understand, follow and give both written and oral instructions and be comfortable working with diverse individuals in face-to-face contact and over the telephone. The employee must be able to use speech and hearing for ordinary and telephone conversation.

Mathematical Skills: Must be able to perform simple calculations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division) and apply concepts such as ratios and percentages in practical situations.

Performance Skills: Must be punctual, organized, self-motivated, flexible, and possess a desire to learn and assist those he/she interacts with.

Protect the Mission: Must complete the online course for this area and pass the Background Checks required by The Salvation Army for employment.
