POSITION SPECIFICS

Penn State Extension is seeking a Master Gardener Coordinator to oversee the general function and activities of the Penn State Extension Master Gardener (MG) volunteer program in Cumberland County. The coordinator works under the supervision of the Area Coordinator and State Master Gardener Coordinator.

For the Cumberland County program, the coordinator will work closely with MG volunteers to provide education on sustainable horticulture practices to county residents. Specific duties include:

  • Serve as the Penn State Extension Master Gardener program spokesperson for Cumberland County.

  • Serve as the liaison between the county extension office, the state-level MG Program and the volunteers.

  • Empower, organize, and lead MG volunteers to educate county residents about horticultural and environmental issues through community outreach projects.

  • Prepare program impact reports on a quarterly and annual basis.

  • Recruit, select, and train new volunteers.

  • Ensure volunteers' compliance with Penn State policies.

  • Oversee volunteer projects.

  • Identify opportunities and educational needs of consumers and stakeholders in the county.

  • Identify, coordinate, and promote volunteer continuing education opportunities.

  • Coordinate both general and committee meetings for volunteers.

  • Create a program budget for project income and expenses and fundraise where appropriate using education-based strategies.

  • Engage community members as appropriate to promote Extension, the Master Gardener Program and Penn State.

  • Use technology, mass media and personal contacts to promote MG public education programs and events.

  • Contribute to select state-level projects (exact project determined by coordinator interest and skill set).

  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the State Master Gardener Coordinator.

MINIMUM EDUCATION, WORK EXPERIENCE & REQUIRED CERTIFICATIONS

If filled as Extension Educator - Professional, this position requires: Bachelor's Degree No prior relevant work experience required Required Certifications: None If filled as Extension Educator - Intermediate Professional, this position requires: Master's Degree 1+ years of relevant experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience accepted Required Certifications: None

Required Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated ability to manage volunteers

  • Ability to inspire and develop leadership in individuals and committees

  • Ability to build and maintain community partnerships

  • Experience in adult or non-formal education

  • Strong organizational and communications skills (both oral and written)

  • Bachelor's degree or higher in horticulture, environmental science, or human sciences.

BACKGROUND CHECKS/CLEARANCES

This position requires the following clearances in addition to applicable background checks: PA State Police Criminal Background Check, PA Child Abuse History Clearance Form, and Federal (FBI) Fingerprint Criminal Background Check. This position requires that you operate a motor vehicle as a part of your job duties. A valid driver's license and successful completion of a motor vehicle records check will be required in addition to standard background checks. Penn State does not sponsor or take over sponsorship of a staff employment Visa. Applicants must be authorized to work in the U.S.

SALARY & BENEFITS

The salary range for this position, including all possible grades, is $42,100.00 - $74,000.00.
