Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
1. Excellent attention to customer service, especially with respect to students and faculty.
2. Excellent ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, with faculty, staff, students, parents, the public, and administrators from other academic units and departments.
3. Excellent eye for detail.
4. Technological skills necessary to perform data entry, manage departmental calendars, and create departmental reports.
5. Ability to work collaboratively and independently, depending on the task, including the ability to anticipate needs and complete important tasks without needing to be asked.
6. Experience working in a professional office setting with a record of dependability, reliability, and excellent attendance history.
7. Demonstrated ability to handle multiple, complex tasks simultaneously, accurately, and on time.
8. Demonstrated experience and aptitude in the use of computer office software such as Microsoft Word, Access and Excel.
9. Basic- to intermediate-level experience and aptitude in the use of Adobe Creative Suite software used for graphic design, video editing, web development, and photography
10. Ability to work in a diverse work environment.
11. Demonstrated ability to problem-solve and use sound judgment using creative thinking skills.
12. Demonstrated ability to use discretion and good judgment in handling and maintaining confidential information in a professional manner.
Department Hiring Range $20 per hour
Position Overview




Primary Purpose of Position
The administrative support associate provides direct administrative support to the department chair (and assistant chair), and handles processes related to the academic programs in the Department of Mass Communication. In addition, this position serves as department staff contact for students, parents, faculty and others regarding the department and its degree programs. This position will manage the front desk, provide customer service as the first point of contact, respond to emails and phone calls, provide administrative support to the department, maintain sensitive information, and apply current policies, regulations, and procedures. This position is also responsible for maintaining budget accounts, ordering equipment and supplies, and processing travel authorizations and travel claims, and other duties as assigned, including supervising work-study students.
Primary Function of Organizational Unit
The mission of the Department of Mass Communication is to prepare students for careers and study in mass communication by offering engaged learning, student media and research experiences, and connections to professional practice opportunities. The department offers a bachelor's degree and enrolls approximately 200 undergraduate students. The department offers five concentrations: Broadcast Media, Digital Filmmaking, Journalism, Media Studies, and Public Relations. The department also includes the award-winning co-curricular activities, including the Campus Echo student news publication, the Central News student newscast, and our web-based radio station AudioNet. The department also offers students opportunities through access to our NPR radio station WNCU-FM 90.7, and the NCCU TV Studio. The department is also responsible for providing courses that meet the General Education Curriculum speech requirement.
