The Industrial Engineer is responsible for data collection, analysis, constructing, enhancing productivity and product flow, product cost models, and capacity and workflow planning. Responsible for cycle time studies, Distribution Center labor standards, and working with Operations Teams on standards. Partners with the Broadline (distribution centers, transportation, etc) leadership teams to ensure that Gordon Food Service goals for capacity, output, productivity and quality are met. This position will be building and implementing systems and processes from the ground up.

The primary focus and measure of success will be centered on these five key initiatives:

  • Build Our Engineered Labor Standards: Take ownership of developing and implementing fair and sustainable Engineered Labor Standards. You will work with a collaborative team to perform labor analysis, set standards, and optimize to improve efficiency.

  • Integrate Standards into Our Core Systems: Be the critical link between industrial engineering principles and our technology stack. Your experience with Warehouse Management Systems (WMS), Warehouse Execution Systems (WES), and controls software will be vital.

  • Lead the Deployment and Governance: Spearhead the deployment of these standards, ensuring a smooth rollout through effective training and communication. You will establish crucial maintenance and audit schedules.

  • Drive Measurable Performance Improvements: Analyze performance data, identify opportunities, and initiate process and system improvements aimed directly at improving key metrics like Picks Per Hour (PPH), order accuracy, and safety.

  • Partner on Future-State Automation: Be a vital partner to our Solutions Engineering team, validating concepts by evaluating labor and overhead savings to justify automation investment.

What you will do:

  • Manages and implements various productivity improvements, training programs, and engineering initiatives to help drive efficiency and service within the business. Identify and implement change within the operation through Data Analytics, CI, Engineering, and Automation efforts to deliver higher levels of performance in safety, quality, capacity, delivery, and cost.

  • Partners with enterprise leaders to define and plan various business applications such as: enterprise strategic initiatives, product flow optimization, best practice process improvement, material handling and process automation.

  • Researches automation techniques, testing new systems for efficiency and planning DC layouts to optimize Distribution Processes. Stays abreast of the latest technology in warehousing and evaluates material handling equipment requirements as needed. Works with vendors to identify operational equipment and automation solutions.

  • Executes engineering projects with precision, defining scopes, timelines, and tracking performance metrics to ensure success. Develops project scopes, specifications and estimates and ensure proper change management on assigned projects

  • Partners and supports internal stakeholders to optimize product flow across all Distribution Operations.

  • Provides engineering support, often collaborating with cross-functional areas, and helps achieve KPI's and objectives. Develops and manages project plans for major operational improvement activities.

  • Develops workflow models using theory of constraints. Determines the most efficient sequence of operations/workflow. Recommend methods for maximum asset utilization of Distribution facilities, equipment and personnel.

  • Develops, validates, and maintains time-studied standards. Analyze and develop engineered standards utilizing time and motion studies, statistical analysis and manpower planning tools to improve productivity and service level. Adjust and revitalize standards, procedures, and layouts as needed to reflect changes in policy or procedure or process.

  • Applies engineering methodologies/tools such as product slotting, studying labor standards (time studies), layouts and optimization of flow, data profiling and analysis, and resource modeling to improve distribution and/or transportation operations.

  • Develops improved methods, including evaluating new processes and/or procedures, and the most efficient means of utilizing floor space and time, develop layout to scale using AutoCad or other relevant software.

  • Identifies facility design requirements based on activity levels, product dimensional profiles, product flow and transportation methods.

  • Performs value stream mapping, process improvements and standardization across multiple sites. Identifies bottlenecks and improves flow; analyzes inbound, outbound and inventory operations to create and maintain optimum warehouse operations.

  • Determines metrics and creates comprehensive dashboards to monitor the progress and effectively communicate with leadership through data collection and analysis. Develops metrics that provide data for process measurement, identifying indicators for future improvement opportunities.

  • Analyzes product inputs and capacity models to perform capacity planning. Constructs and/or updates capacity models from product, process, equipment and labor data.

  • Effectively leverages data analytics, engineering methodologies, and core Lean tools to enable root cause identification and elimination

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

When you will work:

  • Monday to Friday, 8 am to 5 pm

  • Hybrid schedule; 4 days in office in Wyoming, MI with 1 day remote

What you will bring to the table:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Industrial, Mechanical, Electrical or Manufacturing Engineering required

  • Experience with time and motion studies, preferably involving warehouse job functions is required

  • 5 or more years of industrial engineering experience, preferably within a distribution center setting preferred

  • Master Degree in Industrial Engineering preferred

  • Multi site experience is strongly preferred

  • Mechanical, Electrical, and/or Manufacturing Design Experience preferred

  • Knowledge of material handling solutions and automation types such as racking and other storage solution designs, conveyor and sortation equipment; and other automation solutions (AS/RS), Autonomous Mobile Robots.

  • Experience in core engineering and data analysis functions (slotting, utilization, labor planning, layouts, metrics, etc.)

  • Knowledge of Warehouse Management operations, data analytics, Industrial Engineering, warehouse types, warehouse layout/ design and Lean methods.

  • Experience and ability to Mine and organize data from multiple systems for data analysis including SQL/queries from other databases, Alteryx or other relational databases or relevant experience.

  • Must be detail-oriented, analytical, and have a continuous improvement mindset.

  • Troubleshooting and analytical skills related to interpreting trend charts, calculation tables, and system related properties.

  • Strong computer skills including report writing and completion of inspection forms.

  • Ability to manage multiple projects and timelines in an efficient manner.

  • Budget - Provide budgeting information to Management and also maintain and track budgeting for projects providing reporting as needed.

  • Self Management - Ability to manage schedule and workload.

  • Provide management at all levels consultation, reporting, and recommendations, on system health, improvements, and operations.

  • Ability to work effectively with others and demonstrate accuracy and thoroughness.

  • Must be able to read, analyze, and interpret written communications and be able to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, verbal, diagram, or schedule formats.

  • Must possess the ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals and be able to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.

  • Business Acumen - intuitive and applicable understanding of the financial, profitability and cash drivers, external environment, and the "big picture" of the business to enable good, quick business decisions.
