Posting Summary
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking a Business Specialist for the English department within the School of Arts and Sciences. This position reports directly to the Director of Finance and Operations.

The English Department is a large and dynamic academic unit, comprising approximately 45 tenured/tenure-track faculty, 90 non-tenured faculty, 100 lecturers (PTLs), 89 graduate students, 17 staff members, and multiple Class 4 and Class 5 employees.
Among the key duties of this position are the following:

  • Oversees all business services for the department, managing a wide range of financial activities.
  • Budgets, handles financial reporting and analysis, reconciliations, accounts payable and accounts receivables. These tasks are carried out in alignment with internal accounting controls, generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP), and University policies and procedures.
  • Serves as a preparer for all business functions for the department which includes but is not limited to processing purchase orders and expense management through university systems such as MarketPlace and Concur.
  • Aids with resolving routine HR-related issues and preparing personnel/payroll actions in University systems like the SAS Appointment Portals, PeopleSoft HCM, and ROCS.
  • Prepares and maintains essential records, reports, and documentation related to both financial and personnel functions.
  • Serves as a liaison between the English Department and various University offices, including SAS-HR, SAS-Finance, and University Human Resources (UHR).
  • Leads and provides work direction, training and technical assistance to staff, casual and student employees.
  • Plays a vital role in human resource administration & payroll management for the department.
  • Aspects of employee appointments-such as hiring, reappointments, promotions, transfers, and terminations-along with employee charging instructions.

Minimum Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's Degree or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience that demonstrates knowledge and understanding of finance, budgeting, generally accepted accounting principles and practices.
  • A minimum of two years relevant experience in a financial/accounting function, good communication skills, and computer literacy.
