Job Description

Elwyn seeks a Manager of the Grounds to work under the direction of the Executive Director of Facilities and Operations, and will be responsible for over 250 acres of grounds on Elwyn's Main Campus in Media, PA. They will also collaborate with the Executive Director in developing Grounds SOPs for all Elwyn's holdings.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Management of Landscape Maintenance Activities
  • Plan and schedule work in accordance with seasonal needs, Elwyn calendar, and current weather conditions to assure that established standards for appearance, plant health, cleanliness, and public safety are attained to on daily basis.
  • Respond to all emergency situations regarding landscape/snow removal that cannot be solved with staffing on site.
  • Strong organizational skills, including the ability to plan, prioritize, schedule, and execute work assignments.
  • Ability to understand and execute oral and written instructions. Ability to prepare reports such as cost estimates.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to effectively interact and maintain working relationships and collaborate with others.
  • Knowledge and skill in computer applications and related programs in support of business activities.
  • Experience in using and maintaining specialized tools and equipment associated with trades.
  • Reading blueprints and schematics.
  • This position makes purchasing decisions in their areas of responsibility. Failure to properly do this could result in purchases in violation of federal, state and Elwyn's rules or budget overruns.
  • This position is required to make decisions concerning the assignment, scheduling, and evaluating the work of a number of employees. Failure to do this properly could result in inefficient use of resources and could negatively affect Elwyn operations.
  • This position is responsible for decisions involving safety issues affecting department personnel and the university community. Poor judgement when dealing with these matters could result in injuries or even fatalities to campus personnel.

Plan review and design of landscaping related projects.

  • Recommend specifications and standards for landscaping activities on Main Campus and all locations nationally.
  • Review construction drawings for landscaping and irrigation related projects to ensure compliance with Elwyn Standards.
  • Select, order and direct installation of site plantings and materials to enhance Main Campus and locations nationally.

Construction Management

  • Manage landscape-related projects being done either by outside contractors or in-hours staff.
  • Develop and control cost estimates for landscape projects.

Budget

  • Plan spending patterns and staffing levels to keep expenditure within the annual budget for the department.
  • Propose major equipment purchases and identify major landscaping enhancement or deferred maintenance projects for funding.
  • Develop a strategy for spending the budget specifically on irrigation, flower bed maintenance, upgrades, and staffing.

Other Duties as Assigned

Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA's)

Required education: Bachelor's Degree or Equivalent in Landscape Architecture and or Horticulture 10 years' experience completing similar work.

Required certification, training.

  • Customer Service
  • Managing a budget
  • Chemical Application License
  • Holds appropriate license/certification for the specific work to be done in the city and state in which the work will be completed.
