Under the general direction of the VCMS HR Director, the VCMS HR Generalist provides HR support across multiple SIO sections and serves as a key resource to supervisors, managers, and staff. The position applies professional HR concepts to coordinate routine HR operations, interpret policies, and support recruitment, classification, compensation, and employee relations matters of moderate scope and complexity. This position supports VCMS HR's centralized service model by reviewing and routing lower-level HR actions-such as recruitments, stipends, equity requests, reclassifications, and range adjustments-ensuring accuracy, compliance, and alignment with policy before submission to Campus HR. The VCMS HR Generalist also provides dedicated support to the SIO Mariners workforce within SOMTS, overseeing complex timekeeping functions involving overtime rules, weekend schedules, comp-time eligibility, and leave activity. The role ensures correct pay input, compliance with UC and federal regulations, and accurate timekeeping documentation. The position interacts daily with VCMS departments, provides policy interpretation, supports job description development, helps resolve routine employee relations issues, maintains HR records and tracking tools, and assists in improving HR processes and workflows across the VCMS HR unit. QUALIFICATIONS*Analytical skills to conduct analysis and develop recommendations; demonstrates organizational skills and problem-solving skills. Has working knowledge of other areas of HR. *Knowledge of organizational policies and procedures and knowledge of functional area. *Basic knowledge of human resources policies and programs, and how they affect other organizational policies and procedures. *Knowledge of a human resources management system (HRMS), and / or other related business software programs and systems. *Proficient in communicating clearly and effectively verbally and in writing and in integrating information in the completion of assignments. *Demonstrated ability to handle difficult or volatile situations / individuals effectively. *Strong organizational, analysis and decision-making skills to continually prioritize between long and short-term needs in an environment with competing demands and constant requests for priority changes. Ability to keep track of ongoing projects and tasks simultaneously and meet multiple concurrent deadlines. *Demonstrated experience in maintaining confidentiality of personnel or other sensitive issues and in exercising discretion in dealing with controversial or potentially sensitive topics. *Working knowledge of recruiting techniques, media and recruitment sources for a variety of occupations, including web and print outlets. Experience recruiting and employing a wide range of exempt and non-exempt occupations. SPECIAL CONDITIONS
Pay Transparency Act Annual Full Pay Range: $65,800 - $115,000 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%) Hourly Equivalent: $31.51 - $55.08 Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs.
