Advanced Radiation Therapist - Full time - Detroit

GENERAL SUMMARY:

Under the guidance of the Manager of Radiation Oncology and departmental leadership, engages in advanced treatment techniques to ensure safe integration of cutting-edge technology. Serves as a liaison with physician and physicist champions, upholding safety standards in advanced pathways. Delivers direct patient care, leads the clinical team, and supports departmental initiatives for quality, efficiency, and innovation. Drives improvements in cancer care by focusing on complex specialty services and enhancing treatment outcomes through autonomous practice beyond standard radiation therapy roles.

PRINCIPLE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
In coordination with the specialized service physics lead and physicians, for SRS/SBRT, MRI (to include MRI Guided Adaptive Radiation Therapy, MRI Simulation and MRI Safety), Brachytherapy, Total Skin and Total Body Irradiation:
1. Performs advanced procedures in simulation, treatment, and patient visits.
2. Creates, maintains and modifies simulation and treatment policies and procedures.
3. Oversees staff training, credentialing and competencies ensuring staff proficiency in specialty-specific techniques and safety protocols, including Level 2 safety.
4. Performs safe complex treatment delivery utilizing innovative advanced technology.
5. Competently rotates between complex modalities and novel approaches such as SRS/SBRT, MRI-guided therapies, Brachytherapy, Hyperthermia, Total Skin Irradiation (TSI), and Total Body Irradiation (TBI), as well as complex external beam cases.
6. Demonstrates critical thinking skills to adapt to changes in the scientific landscape, technology, and service requirements, ensuring high-quality delivery of specialty services.
7. Applies specialized training and expertise to enhance efficiency and effectiveness in performing work and treatment delivery, including troubleshooting technical issues at the machine.
8. Develops and delivers educational programs and training sessions for staff, students, residents, and visiting professionals on advanced radiotherapy techniques, best practices, and technical innovations.
9. Participates in research projects under supervision from physics and clinical faculty to contribute to novel knowledge generation in advancing the field of radiotherapy.
10.Collaborates closely with clinical champions, managers, supervisors, and physicists to ensure consistent application of policies, procedures, and treatment protocols, while proactively driving innovation, improving patient care, and navigating complexities of clinical practice.
11.Reviews patient prescriptions to ascertain type of treatment required, location of affected areas, history of previous radiation treatment, etc.
12.Safely positions patients utilizing immobilization devices.
13.Utilizes appropriate treatment accessories as prescribed by the physician

14.Operates treatment machine (MR linear accelerator) precisely.
15.Administers ionizing radiation as prescribed per physician.
16.Verifies radiation prescription prior to treatment and confirms total radiation dose following treatment in patient charts.
17.Documents treatment in patient charts.
18.Localizes patient markings daily.
19.Completes on-going imaging of patients per departmental policy.
20.Assists patients in coordinating appointment time for daily treatments, accommodating patient transportation, and other appointments.
21.Refers patients to social worker for counseling, transportation and medical equipment needs, etc. as appropriate.
22.Refers patients to nurse or physician for conditions requiring evaluation, as appropriate.
23.Assumes the duties of simulation.
24.Rotates through treatment areas as assigned.
25.Responsible for cleaning therapy rooms and work area (Zone III and Zone IV); maintains linen and medical supplies for treatment and simulation room.
26.Adheres to the quality assurance policies of the department (chart checks, time-outs, machine warm-up, etc.).

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Radiation Therapy.
  • Three (3) years of experience as a Radiation Therapist.
  • One (1) year of experience in complex modalities such as SRS/SBRT, MRI-guided therapies, or Brachytherapy.
  • One (1) year of general radiation simulation experience.

CERTIFICATIONS/LICENSURES REQUIRED:

A.R.R.T. Radiation Therapy Technology Certification
