About the Role

As an intern at Amcor, you'll meet and learn from leaders across the organization, work on meaningful projects, and build the skills, knowledge and network that will propel you career forward. Amcor's Summer Internship Program is designed to encourage practical application of classroom concepts in an advanced industrial manufacturing environment. From Day 1, Interns are paired with a Mentor who serves as their primary trainer, main point of contact, and professional role model throughout the summer. Matches are made based on mutual fit between the student's field of interest, the Mentor's area of expertise, and the team's workload. For Summer 2026, Amcor's Lawrence plant has 3 Mentors available for current college students seeking real-world experience in project, process, or controls/automation engineering.

Amcor's Engineering Interns are dependable, curious, and not afraid to fail forward. They embrace the grind, take initiative, and proactively manage their resources amongst assigned projects, daily responsibilities, and impromptu tasks, ensuring their work meets expectations for safety, quality, and timeliness. All Engineering Interns share responsibilities such as supporting colleagues in Maintenance with SolidWorks and 3D printing activities, engaging in basic troubleshooting of industrial equipment (supervised), and assembling requested engineering prototypes.

Each Engineering Intern's daily work will differ from their peer's as follows:

Project: A balanced workday consisting of ~40% office administration (design, documentation, meetings), ~30% time on the production floor (taking measurements, observing automation, collaborating with technical team members), and ~30% hands-on activity (experimentation setup, execution, modification).

Process: An active workday consisting of ~30% office administration (test plan development, documentation and execution, work order evaluation and trend analysis), and ~70% time on production floor (shadowing Process Engineer and Technicians, collecting data, training on injection molding operations, identifying process improvements).

Controls/Automation: A computer-centric workday consisting of ~80% office administration (developing digital process monitoring systems, coding, referencing technical documentation), and ~20% time on the production floor (stakeholder meetings, collaboration with production and maintenance teams, training on electrical hardware and concepts).

Projects that may be delegated to the interns include:

Project: Suction cup lifecycle analysis, label loading tool design, centerline marking, rework inspection module development.

Process: Short shot progression testing, process parameter sensitivity testing, troubleshooting part defect root causes.

Controls/Automation: Build production monitoring dashboards, Human Machine Interfaces (HMIs) programming and installation, scrap transfer project development, pricing, and installation.

Responsibilities:

• Demonstrate reliability, punctuality, initiative, and follow-through from Day 1.

• Observe and ask questions of Mentor and maintenance trainers, check in regularly with the Manager, and proactively report on progress and challenges, collaborating with team members to creatively resolve problems.

• Apply general engineering principles to capital projects aimed at safety improvement and cost reduction, engaging with colleagues at all levels to inform end-user functionality and maintenance feasibility.

• Develop assigned project plans and schedules, including estimating timing and costs, determining resource constraints, running feasibility studies, and identifying success metrics.

• Embrace a team player mentality by approaching all assigned responsibilities with an open mind and enthusiasm, regardless of scope.

• Communicate with colleagues in person, via email, and using Microsoft Teams, immediately notifying the Manager/nearest leader of any safety concerns, observed Code of Conduct violations, or other emergencies.

• Participate in required internship programming, attending optional activities when possible, prioritizing the production schedule and assigned job duties.

Qualifications:

• Currently enrolled college student pursuing a degree in Engineering, Robotics, Computer Science, Materials Science, or related field

  • Preferred disciplines: Plastics/Plastics Technology, Industrial, Automation, and Mechanical

• Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to collaborate effectively

• Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and critical thinking skills

• Strong organizational and time management skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities simultaneously with minimal supervision

• Highly proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel and PowerPoint), familiarity navigating CAD (SolidWorks, DraftSight), and the ability to learn new software quickly

• Comfortable and confident using basic hand tools and measurement instruments

• Aptitude for and interest in mechanics, machinery, automation, and other technically-challenging work

• Preferred - Process: Previous experience operating injection molding equipment, plastics-specific coursework, process engineering

• Preferred - Controls/Automation: Previous exposure to data analytics, coding, programming (MATLAB, Python, SQL)

Physical requirements:

• Able to stand, walk, bend, or stoop for long periods of time

• Able to lift 35 pounds without assistance

• 20/20 vision (with correction) and the ability to distinguish colors

• Able to safely climb stairs and ladders without assistance

• Good manual dexterity

• Able to work around grease, oils, solvents, and in dusty environments without adverse reaction

• Able to respond to visual and audible alarms and verbally communicate in a manufacturing environment

• Work Schedule: Full-time (40 hours/week), standard business hours Monday - Friday
