The Mt. Graham International Observatory is seeking a skilled and dependable individual for a full-time Auto Mechanic IV position. This role involves performing day-to-day work in the technical craft/trade area to ensure that production equipment, machinery, or instruments function reliably and safely, and that facilities, buildings, systems (including HVAC), and plants are in good working order at both the Base Camp on Swift Trail and the observatory site on Mt. Graham. Responsibilities include troubleshooting, maintaining, and repairing facility systems, equipment, and infrastructure to ensure safe and reliable operations. Candidates should be comfortable working at high altitudes, driving in variable weather conditions, and performing complex technical work independently and as part of a team. Strong problem-solving skills, reliability, and effective communication are essential. | Duties & Responsibilities |
- Diagnosing, troubleshooting, and repairing a wide range of systems, including mechanical, electrical, fuel, HVAC, and drivetrain components, on vehicles and equipment within the MGIO fleet. This requires expertise in identifying issues and efficiently resolving them to ensure optimal functionality of all systems. Additionally, the technician is proficient in using multiple welding methods-such as gas, arc, MIG, and TIG welding-to fabricate or repair parts and restore equipment as necessary, ensuring that machinery is repaired to the highest standards.
- Conducts routine vehicle maintenance to ensure all equipment operates smoothly and efficiently. This involves regularly scheduled inspections and servicing to ensure vehicles and equipment remain in optimal working condition. Tasks may include oil changes, tire rotations, fluid checks, and other routine procedures designed to prevent major breakdowns and extend the lifespan of machinery and vehicles. Maintaining and repairing components that naturally degrade over time due to regular use. The focus is on replacing or repairing parts that have become worn out, such as brakes, belts, or suspension components, to ensure continued safe operation and avoid unexpected failures.
- Serving as backup support, on call as needed, will be responsible for diagnosing, maintaining, troubleshooting, and repairing a broad range of building systems and infrastructure across MGIO facilities. This role supports the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of mechanical systems, utility services, and structural components within buildings and on surrounding grounds. Applies advanced technical knowledge to identify system deficiencies, determine root causes, and implement effective corrective actions in a timely manner to minimize downtime and ensure optimal performance. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
* Mechanical systems (HVAC components, pumps, motors, and related equipment) * Utility systems (gas, water, electrical distribution, meters, and controls) * Building systems and infrastructure (doors, hardware, fixtures, walls, ceilings, and flooring) * Grounds and exterior elements (fencing, walkways, lighting, and site structures) * In addition, this position demonstrates proficiency in multiple carpentry methods, including framing, finish carpentry, cabinetry, drywall installation and repair, door and window installation, and general construction modifications to support facility operations and improvement projects.
- Overseeing, assessing, and coordinating the work of other mechanics, ensuring that tasks are completed in line with company standards ensuring quality control and compliance with shop regulations and safety protocols.
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to work at 10,000 feet altitude and handle extreme weather.
- Ability to perform physical tasks including lifting up to 50 lbs.

| Minimum Qualifications |
- High school diploma or high school diploma equivalency is required.
- Minimum of 7 years of relevant experience, or equivalent combination of education and work experience.
- In addition to the education and experience minimum qualifications, Apprenticeship program, technical training experience required.
- Must have a valid driver's license and ability to drive according to the University Fleet Safety Policy.
