Description

DEFINITION
To operate, participate and assist in the design, implementation, lead supervision, and monitoring of various community programs for area youth, adults and/or senior citizens; to perform related duties as required.
CLASS CHARACTERISTICS
Under the direction of the General Services Director or designee, the incumbent operates, coordinates, and assists in developing and planning the day-to-day operations of a variety of community recreational activities and programs. The incumbent is expected to work within a framework of established program guidelines and is expected to perform the full range of community services program responsibilities including organizing, coordinating and participating in activities and monitoring programs for effectiveness. The incumbent receives direction when assignments are made and has latitude in selecting work methods. Work is generally reviewed in progress. The incumbent is expected to refer to the supervisor for instruction on matters which do not conform to established guidelines.

Examples of Duties

Plans, organizes, participates and monitors a variety of youth, adult, and/or senior citizen community programs and activities in local parks, or community facilities; recruits, trains and provides lead supervision for recreation staff and volunteers; conducts safety and other meetings with assigned staff; schedules the use of park, playground and community facilities for program activities; works with local agencies and service organizations to coordinate activities; prepares periodic reports detailing the status of program activities; maintains program records; develops and maintains cooperative working relations with community organizations; assists in the development of media releases, fliers and other promotional materials for program activities; orders supplies and materials necessary for program operations; plans and participates in group off-site trips; prepares purchase orders; and performs related duties as required.

Typical Qualifications

LICENSE REQUIRED
Possession of a valid California class "C" driver's license and a good driving record and current First Aid and CPR Certificates.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying.A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

Education:
* Two (2) years of college, with course work in recreation or a related field;
*Four (4) year college degree with major course work in recreation is desired;

Experience:
* One (1) year of full-time experience in organizing, planning and implementing programs
and activities.

QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of:
* Modern methods, techniques, principles, and procedures used in coordinating,
developing and implementing community programs;
* Common recreational and social needs of youth, adult, and senior citizen groups;
* Principles and practices of lead supervision;
* Laws, regulations, and rules affecting the provisions of community programs.

Ability to:
* Assist in the development of a wide variety of programs suited to the needs of the
community;
* Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the
course of work;
* Analyze, interpret, and explain policies and procedures;
* Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing;
*Coordinate, recruit, train, monitor, and assess program staff and volunteers;.


Supplemental Information

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING CONDITIONS
* Strength: Medium work - occasional lifting, carrying and/or pushing 50 pounds maximum
with frequent lifting and/or carrying of objects weighing up to 25 pounds;
* Ability to work out of doors.

Applicants must meet each qualification for the position by the deadline date. All applications will be reviewed based on the necessary employment standards for the position. Candidates receiving a passing score may be placed on an eligibility list for a period of up to one (1) year. Examinations and department interviews for the position will be administered in the City of Clovis. As determined by the City and at the City's expense, successful candidates shall be required to complete and pass a medical examination, drug/alcohol screen and a background investigation. Possession of a valid California Driver's License and a good driving record will be required prior to hire. Proof of citizenship or eligibility to work in the U.S. will be required at the time of hire.
The examination may consist of questions relative to knowledge of modern methods, techniques, principles and procedures used in coordinating, developing and implementing community programs; common recreational and social needs of youth, adult and senior citizen groups; principles and practices of lead supervision; and laws, regulations and rules affecting the provisions of community programs. The examination may also contain questions regarding the ability to assist in the development of a wide variety of programs suited to the needs of the community; establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work; analyze, interpret and explain policies and procedures; communicate effectively, both orally and in writing; and coordinate, recruit, train, monitor and assess program staff and volunteers.
