Overview

The General Utility Worker is an entry-level role in Construction Services that involves hands-on work in the field and requires a strong focus on safety and teamwork. The primary responsibility of the General Utility Worker (GUW) in Construction Services is to develop skills and qualify for advancement through our training programs in Mechanical, Electrical, Machinist, and/or Welding disciplines.

Responsibilities

Core Responsibilities
  • Assist with constructing, maintaining, and repairing equipment on electrical, steam, and gas systems.
  • Safely operate tools and equipment such as jackhammers, tampers, and digging machinery.
  • Learn to read blueprints and sketches; use hand and power tools for maintenance and construction tasks.
  • Perform physical activities including excavating, climbing, and working in confined spaces.
  • Follow all safety and environmental policies and procedures; this is a Safety-Sensitive position.
  • Obtain required certifications and licenses (e.g., CDL, forklift operator, First Aid/CPR).
  • Provide excellent customer service and represent the company positively.
  • Work overtime, off-hours, rotating shifts, weekends, and holidays; respond to emergencies as needed.
  • Incorporate Human Performance Improvement (HPI) tools into daily work.
  • Support a culture of safety, diversity, operational excellence, cost management, and customer experience.
  • Participate in system emergency assignments to help restore service when needed.
  • If you accept a job offer in connection with this posting, you will be assigned to one of the companys operating regions within Construction Services (Bronx/Westchester, Brooklyn/Queens, or Manhattan) based on operational needs.

Qualifications

Required Education/Experience
  • High School Diploma/GED
Relevant Work Experience
  • Mechanical and/or electrical aptitude is preferred.
  • Comfortable performing physically demanding tasks in outdoor environments.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Willingness to obtain certifications (First Aid, CPR, Bloodborne Pathogens) and licenses when needed.
  • Ability to work in confined spaces and at heights.
  • Strong focus on safety and following company guidelines.
  • Previous construction experience is a plus.
Licenses and Certifications
  • Driver's License Required
Physical Demands
  • Ability to respond to system emergencies
  • Able to work in all weather conditions, i.e. excessive heat and/or cold
  • Perform extended driving through heavy traffic and severe off-road conditions
  • Perform heavy manual labor, i.e. push, pull, and lift up to 50lbs
  • Ability to carry tools and materials when climbing ladders and scaffolds, and entering confined spaces
  • Ability to work in inclement weather and adverse conditions (i.e., excessive heat, cold, noise, confined spaces)
  • Ability to work with, and in, the vicinity of high voltage and/or other high-energy systems
  • Ability to be approved to wear and use either a full or half-face respirator, without facial hair or other conditions that may interfere with the seal, in accordance with OSHA regulations
  • Stand, walk, and climb ladders and stairs for the duration of the workday
  • Stand, walk, lift, climb, bend, kneel, stoop, and/or reach for the duration of the workday
  • Ability to use hand tools and operate heavy machinery, i.e. jackhammers
  • Acknowledge that if selected, must pass a Physical Abilites Test (PAT)
  • Wear necessary Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), i.e. fire-retardant clothing and safety harnesses
  • Work with equipment with a manufacturer weight rating of 350lbs
  • Use equipment with a maximum weight rating of 375lbs when wearing and/or carrying 25lbs of clothing and equipment
Additional Physical Demands
  • The selected candidate will be assigned a System Emergency Assignment (i.e., an emergency response role) and will be expected to work non-business hours during emergencies, which may include nights, weekends, and holidays.
