Senior Technical Accountant
Our client, a well-known insurance organization with a significant North American presence, is seeking a Senior Technical Accountant to join its finance function. This role is highly visible and will serve as the primary technical accounting while also contributing to group-wide accounting policy and advisory initiatives. The role is hands-on in nature and requires independent judgment, strong research capabilities, and the ability to clearly communicate technical conclusions to both finance and non-finance stakeholders. You will act as the lead technical accounting contact for U.S. statutory and regulatory matters, ensuring compliance with applicable accounting standards and supporting governance reporting. Provide technical accounting and policy expertise across the broader organization, supporting global finance teams on complex or non-routine accounting matters.
Key Responsibilities
  • Lead technical reviews of U.S. statutory filings and regulatory returns prior to issuance, ensuring accuracy and adherence to internal policies and regulatory requirements.
  • Maintain and enhance statutory and group-level disclosures, ensuring alignment with evolving accounting standards and best practices.
  • Prepare and present technical accounting updates and reporting for audit committees and other governance forums.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for resolving complex or judgmental audit matters related to financial reporting.
  • Act as a trusted business partner to finance teams across the organization, providing guidance on the accounting implications of transactions, structural changes, and new initiatives.
  • Research, evaluate, and document conclusions on complex accounting issues, including the preparation of formal technical memoranda.
  • Support finance business-as-usual teams with technical accounting papers for both internal governance and external audit purposes.
  • Liaise directly with external auditors on technical accounting topics and interpretation matters.
  • Contribute to the development, maintenance, and enhancement of global accounting policies and procedures.
  • Monitor new and emerging accounting and regulatory guidance, assess impacts to the organization, and support implementation of new or amended standards.
  • Provide technical coaching and mentorship to finance team members, promoting consistent application of accounting policies and strengthening overall technical capability.
Qualifications & Experience
  • Demonstrated experience working within or advising large insurance organizations, including exposure to U.S. statutory reporting and NAIC requirements.
  • Strong command of technical accounting principles, with deep knowledge of NAIC SSAP and their application within insurance.
  • Minimum of 5years of progressive accounting experience, ideally within the property & casualty insurance sector.
  • Experience in accounting advisory or consulting roles within public accounting is a plus.

  • the individual's skill sets, experience and training;
  • licensure and certification requirements;

With that said, as required by local law, Vaco by Highspring believes that the following salary range referenced above reasonably estimates the base compensation for an individual hired into this position in geographies that require salary range disclosure. The individual may also be eligible for discretionary bonuses.
