Nursing Unit Secretary
Barbara Bush Children's Hospital - MaineHealth

Barbara Bush Children's Hospital at MaineHealth is seeking a compassionate, organized, and quick-thinking Nursing Unit Secretary to join our inpatient care team. This role is vital to the daily operations of our unit and serves as the first point of contact for patients, families, and visitors.

The Nursing Unit Secretary performs a combination of clerical, receptionist, and transporter duties in a fast-paced pediatric environment. This position plays a key role in creating a welcoming, supportive experience for families during their hospital stay.

About the Unit

  • 30-bed inpatient unit

  • 8-bed Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU)

Key Responsibilities

  • Serve as the first person patients and families encounter on the unit, providing a warm, friendly, and professional welcome

  • Answer and triage phone calls in a high-volume environment

  • Respond to call bells and communicate needs promptly to the care team

  • Unlock and monitor secured unit doors

  • Check visitors in and out, ensuring unit safety and compliance

  • Greet and assist families, patients, and visitors throughout their stay

  • Support unit operations through clerical and administrative tasks

  • Assist with patient transport as needed

  • Think quickly on your feet while managing multiple priorities

Schedule

  • 6:30 a.m. - 7:00 p.m.

  • Three 12-hour shifts per week

  • Rotating weekends (every third weekend)

  • Rotating holidays

Required Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs)

  1. Education: High School diploma or GED preferred.
  2. License/Certifications: Current BLS certification preferred or may be required based on location.
  3. Experience: One year of hospital or health care setting preferred.
