About the Job
This role is responsible for independently performing high quality, high-level fetal cardiovascular imaging via echocardiography and all related clinical activities for the Fetal Heart Program including record keeping, database maintenance and quality assurance. This role is also responsible for training and education of other fetal cardiac sonographers, fellows, and trainees. This role serves as a higher-level position for sonographers with continuous fetal cardiovascular imaging experience and has demonstrated excellence and experience with the most complex forms of fetal cardiovascular imaging. This role must demonstrate advanced knowledge of general fetal abnormalities and has a good understanding of such congenital anomalies effecting the cardiac condition. This role will also undertake responsibilities of leadership within the Fetal Heart Program in areas such as: 1) laboratory maintenance of certification and accreditation, 2) clinical quality assurance methods, 3) clinical and systems quality improvement initiatives, 4) community imaging service and out-reach education organization, and 5) research project coordination and leadership. Expectations of this role may include travel between locations.

What you will do

  • Performance of high level fetal cardiovascular imaging via echocardiography.
    • Receives patients to the Fetal Cardiovascular Imaging Suite. Introduces patient and family members to the process of fetal cardiovascular imaging.
    • Ensures patient care is provided in clean, safe, quiet, and secure environment. Renders excellent patient care to patients and families. All hospital related interactions are courteous and confidential and in accordance with HIPPAA regulations.
    • Hands on scanning of pregnant women to include demonstration of estimates of gestational age, fetal size, and congenital anomalies.
    • Performs accurate and quality fetal cardiovascular imaging based on standards established by the Medical Director of the Fetal Heart Program.
    • Enters data accurately and completely into digital image reporting system and image databases and completes all paperwork and reports promptly.
    • Assists with fetal echocardiography during fetal OR cases.
    • Participates in Fetal Heart Program outreach clinics in fetal cardiovascular imaging.
  • Training and Education
    • Trains and evaluates fetal cardiovascular sonographers.
    • Trains and evaluates Cardiology Fellows.
    • Trains and evaluates Fetal Heart Program visitor and rotating sonographers
    • Participates in the weekly Fetal Heart Program patient review meeting.
    • Keeps abreast of new technology.
    • Attends and participates in Fetal Heart Program staff meetings.
    • Completes mandatory education within prescribed timelines.
    • Participates in Fetal Heart Program educational outreach initiatives.
    • Participates in family conferences and education of parents and families.
    • Participates in designing and creating educational materials concerning fetal cardiovascular imaging for patients, families, and community providers
  • Participates and leads in research activities related to the Fetal Heart Program
    • Participates/leads fetal heart research, data collection, quality assurance/ improvement/projects.
    • Takes a leadership role in research study design and research implementation for Fetal Heart Program research projects.
    • Takes a leadership role in coordination of institutional site participation in multicenter collaborative research studies
  • Maintains and upkeeps facilities.
    • Maintains equipment and probes.
    • Informs supervisor when supplies needed.
    • Informs supervisor of faulty equipment.
    • Maintains upkeep for computer/digital image acquisition units, digital workstations, fetal ultrasound system.

Licenses and Certifications

  • Advanced Registered Cardiac Sonographer (ACS) - Cardiovascular Credentialing International - upon hire - Required or
  • Registered Diagnostic Cardiac Sonographer (RDCS) - American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography - upon hire - Required or
  • Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonography (RDMS) - American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography - upon hire - Required and
  • Registered Diagnostic Cardiac Sonographer in Pediatric Echocardiography (RDCS-PE) - American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography - upon hire - Preferred or
  • Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonography (RDMS) in OB/GYN of fetal echocardiography (FE) - American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography - upon hire - Preferred and
  • Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) - issued through on organization that requires a hands-on instructor lead psychomotor skills verification (ex. American Heart Association or Red Cross). - upon hire - Required

Education

  • Associate's Degree Cardiovascular Technology Required
  • Bachelor's Degree Preferred

Experience

  • At least five (5) years of scanning and medical imaging including OB/GYN ultrasound experience Required
  • At least five (5) years of imaging pediatric cardiology patients experience Required

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Advanced knowledge of:
  • All forms of simple congenital heart disease and their anatomical and physiological manifestations before and after birth (e.g. atrial septal defect, ventricular septal defect, valvar stenosis, etc.). (Required proficiency)
  • All forms of complex congenital heart disease and their anatomical and physiological manifestations before and after birth (e.g. Tetralogy of Fallot, transposition of the great arteries, hypoplastic left heart syndrome, complex single ventricle, etc.). (Required proficiency)
  • The spectrum of fetal arrhythmias, fetal physiology, maternal - placental physiology. (Required proficiency)
  • The impact of twin gestation on the fetal cardiovascular system, the impact of maternal disease on the fetal cardiovascular system (e.g. maternal diabetes, maternal systemic lupus erythematosis, etc.). (Required proficiency)
  • Digital storage and processing systems for echocardiography. (Required proficiency)
  • Intermediate knowledge of:
  • The spectrum of genetic and chromosomal abnormalities and their cardiovascular manifestations. (Required proficiency)
  • The spectrum of fetal organ system anomalies (brain, kidney, lungs, liver, neural tube, etc.). (Required proficiency)
  • Principles of biological ultrasound. (Required proficiency)
  • Safety requirements for uses of biological ultrasound in pregnancy. (Required proficiency)
  • Advanced proficiency in:
  • Trans-abdominal and transvaginal image acquisition of the fetal cardiovascular system at all stages of gestation. (Required proficiency)
  • Use of all imaging modalities including two dimensional, Doppler and color Doppler echocardiography. (Required proficiency)
  • Specialized utilization of Doppler ultrasound in evaluating maternal uterine artery and other ultrasound techniques applied towards characterization of the placenta (Required proficiency)
  • Application of Doppler ultrasound techniques towards estimation of flow such as ventricular output and combined cardiac output as well as select organ flow (Required proficiency)
  • Familiarity with:
  • New technologies unique to each of the various ultrasound systems (three-dimensional imaging, harmonic imaging, tissue Doppler imaging, etc.). (Required proficiency)
  • New techniques used for imaging during 1st trimester of gestation (nuchal translucency, etc.). (Required proficiency)
  • Fetal vascular anomalies that affect the heart and other organ systems (brain, kidney, etc.). (Required proficiency)
  • Basic skill in the use of trans-vaginal imaging of the fetal cardiovascular system. (Required proficiency)
  • Ability to travel between locations. (Required proficiency)
