Essential Job Duties
The Applied Research Specialist will conduct independent and collaborative research focused on swine health, nutrition, and physiology. Day-to-day responsibilities include designing and implementing pig-based research studies; overseeing animal trials; collecting, managing, and organizing research data; performing statistical analyses and interpreting results; and contributing to the preparation of manuscripts, abstracts, and technical reports. The position will also involve laboratory-based activities such as biological sample processing and assay execution, as well as collaboration with faculty, graduate students, technical staff, and external partners. The individual will ensure compliance with institutional animal care, biosafety, and research protocols and may provide limited technical guidance or mentorship to students and staff involved in research activities.

This is an hourly, temporary position intended for a recent PhD graduate seeking advanced research training. The position is expected to support grant-funded research activities and contribute to peer-reviewed publications and presentations. Continuation of the appointment is contingent upon funding availability and satisfactory performance.

Work Schedule:
This position is flexible and is expected to work up to 40 hours per week. Work hours are generally Monday through Friday during standard business hours. However, flexibility is required, and work hours may vary based on animal trial schedules, sample collection, and experimental needs. Occasional evening or weekend work may be required.

  • 4 year degree; or an equivalent combination of training and/or related experience

  • Demonstrated experience conducting swine-based research
  • Ability to independently design and execute animal research studies
  • Experience with research data collection, management, and organization
  • Competency in statistical analysis and interpretation of research data
  • Strong written and oral communication skills for scientific reporting and collaboration
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary research team
  • Knowledge of and ability to comply with animal care, biosafety, and research compliance requirements

Preferred Years Experience, Skills, Training, Education

  • PhD in Animal Science or Nutrition preferred with documented experience in swine nutrition and research design
  • 3 years of experience preferred and that may include PhD work experience
  • Experience publishing in peer-reviewed scientific journals
  • Familiarity with laboratory techniques relevant to swine health, nutrition, or physiology
  • Experience with applied or translational swine research
  • Proficiency with statistical software such as SAS, R, JMP, or similar
  • Experience contributing to grant-related activities or collaborative research projects

Required License or Certification


  • IACUC certification
  • Valid driver's license
