Department Summary

Roche Sequencing Solutions (Santa Clara) is a group at Roche developing nanopore based sequencing dedicated to making clinical genetic testing easy and affordable. We are developing a revolutionary, single-molecule DNA sequencer that will improve the lives of people in a wide variety of ways including timely screening for diseases and diagnosis of various cancers. Roche is looking for a motivated and team-oriented individual who is passionate about revolutionary sequencing technology. The System Integration Data Scientist Intern will learn the operation, theory, and data analysis of the Roche Nanopore Sequencing platform. Following Roche product development processes, they will help develop advanced analytics while collaborating with multi-disciplinary teams to accomplish this aim.

This internship position is located in Santa Clara, on-site.

The Opportunity

• Experimental Design: Design and implement experiments on Roche sequencers to test the boundaries of our microfluidic devices and reagents

• Advanced Analytics: Develop and apply advanced statistical models to analyze spatial and temporal variability, system robustness, and signal-to-noise ratios

• System Diagnostics: Help monitor and diagnose complex interfaces between instrument hardware and biological reagents

• Collaborative Insight: Work across diverse functional teams (Sensors, Reagents, and Instrumentation) to translate raw data into actionable engineering improvements

• Present Findings: Visualize and communicate complex data exploration results to stakeholders, delivering what patients need next.

Program Highlights

• Intensive 12-weeks, full-time (40 hours per week) paid internship.

• Program start dates are in May/June (Summer)

• A stipend, based on location, will be provided to help alleviate costs associated with the internship.

• Ownership of challenging and impactful business-critical projects.

• Work with some of the most talented people in the biotechnology industry.

Who You Are

Required Education:
You meet one of the following criteria:

• Must be pursuing a Bachelor's Degree (enrolled student).

• Must have attained a Bachelor's Degree (not currently enrolled in a graduate program).

• Must be pursuing a Master's Degree (enrolled student).

• Must have attained a Master's Degree.

Required Mayors:

Biochemistry, chemistry, materials discipline, computer science, electrical engineering, biomolecular engineering, chemical engineering, statistics, or a related discipline with a background in molecular biology or biochemistry.

Required Skills:

• Ability to perform statistical analysis of data with programs such as JMP, Matlab, R. and are familiar with computer programming in languages such as or Python

• Familiarity with NGS space

• Excellent troubleshooting and problem solving skills, along with experimental design experience

• Excellent communication, collaboration, and interpersonal skills.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Qualifications

• Prefer understanding of or experience of causal inference, DOEs, and statistical modeling

• Prefer understanding of or experience with microfluidics, sequencing methodologies, or other wet laboratory instrumentation

• Prefer understanding of or experience with high-performance computing environments

The expected salary range for this position based on the primary location of California is $45.00-$50.00 hour. Actual pay will be determined based on experience, qualifications, geographic location, and other job-related factors permitted by law. This position also qualifies for paid holiday time off benefits.
