What to Expect

The New Programs Engineering team works at the leading edge of vehicle design and development, working in an iterative environment to study, simulate, build, and prove Tesla's future generation of vehicles. This position will interact with many cross-functional teams from the Design and Vehicle Engineering teams in creating different prototypes for engineering development. This is not a narrow scope technician role - you will be constantly challenged to learn and adapt to create and maintain a wide context of the first ever Tesla prototype vehicles, engineering fleet vehicles, and test apparatus. This is a dynamic role of high variety, impact, and responsibility. You will not find a technician role with more access to early-stage vehicle development.

The exemplary candidate has a deep desire to create and maintain high quality prototype vehicles and test apparatus for Aero, Design, and Vehicle Engineering. They are forward-looking, critical of their own work, and are tireless in improving space, process, and tooling. They care enough to have an opinion but crave getting and giving effective feedback.


What You'll Do
  • Lead the build, final mechanical sign-off, maintenance, and storage of prototype vehicles, mules, and bucks working in conjunction with aero, mechanical, electronics engineering, and fabrication leads
  • Support diagnostics for entire vehicle and test apparatus systems
  • Fabrication and troubleshooting of bespoke electrical harnessing within the automotive and test / instrumentation topics
  • Instrumentation, data acquisition setup, calibration, and checks of all test properties
  • Organization of vehicle and test equipment logistics for offsite events
  • Maintenance of tools and consumables supplies
  • Proactive involvement in development methods and processes to deliver continuous improvement
  • Enthusiasm for extensive travel to support prototype build and validation

What You'll Bring
  • A proven record of delivering excellence as an automotive, race or custom builder or technician
  • Experience in vehicle part installation, wheel/tire changes and chassis installation and setup
  • Understanding of mechanical systems, including motors, bearings, hydraulics, bushings and actuators
  • Good working knowledge of machine shop tools for fabrication of components
  • Experience in full vehicle prototyping preferred.
  • Secondary vocational school certificate preferred (e.g. BMW STEP).
  • Experience with Tesla Technician Software tools a huge plus
  • Experience with Motec or other on-road data acquisition systems are a plus

    Expected Compensation
    $26.14 - $45.03/hour + cash and stock awards + benefits

    Pay offered may vary depending on multiple individualized factors, including market location, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. The total compensation package for this position may also include other elements dependent on the position offered. Details of participation in these benefit plans will be provided if an employee receives an offer of employment.
