Location: Maine Medical Center - Portland, ME
Department: Barbara Bush Children's Hospital - Inpatient Pediatric Unit
Schedule: Day Shift | Two 12-hour shifts per week (6:30 a.m. - 7:00 p.m.) | Every 3rd weekend required

Position Summary

Maine Medical Center's Barbara Bush Children's Hospital is seeking a friendly, organized, and dependable Nursing Unit Secretary (NUS) to join our inpatient pediatric team. This fast-paced, patient- and family-focused unit provides care to children and families across the region.

The Nursing Unit Secretary is often the first person patients and visitors encounter, helping create a welcoming environment while supporting the clinical team and ensuring the unit runs smoothly. This role performs clerical, receptionist, and transporter duties and plays an important part in daily operations.

Schedule
  • Day shift (non-rotating)

  • Two 12-hour shifts per week: 6:30 a.m. - 7:00 p.m.

  • Every 3rd weekend required

  • Schedule varies week-to-week based on team coverage (not a fixed weekly pattern)

Key Responsibilities
  • Greet and assist patients, families, and visitors

  • Answer and direct telephone calls

  • Maintain and organize unit clerical functions

  • Coordinate communication between nursing staff, providers, and ancillary departments

  • Enter and manage patient information in the electronic medical record

  • Assist with patient transport as needed

  • Monitor unit activity and support workflow to keep operations efficient

  • Provide general receptionist and administrative support to the care team

Required Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs)

  1. Education: High School diploma or GED preferred.
  2. License/Certifications: Current BLS certification preferred or may be required based on location.
  3. Experience: One year of hospital or health care setting preferred.
