POSITION SUMMARY:

The Senior Nurse Scientist - Brown University Health System provides enterprise-level expertise and leadership in the development, design, implementation, and dissemination of nurse-driven research, quality improvement (QI), and evidence-based practice (EBP) across Brown University Health. The role advances a culture of inquiry and builds infrastructure that enables multi-site clinical inquiry. The Senior Nurse Scientist partners with nursing and interprofessional leaders to establish standardized processes, foster collaboration, and secure resources to support and scale research, QI, and EBP initiatives. In doing so, this role helps position Brown University Health as a premier center for nursing research and innovation demonstrating impact through measurable patient, workforce, operational, and financial outcomes.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Consultation & Collaborative Support

  • Provide expertise in quality improvement principles, study design, development, analysis and dissemination of new knowledge and the use of evidence to guide and support clinical nursing practice.
  • Guide individuals and teams conducting research, QI, or EBP across various clinical settings, tailoring support to each site's context.
  • Assist with dissemination activities (e.g., presentations, posters, publications) at the local, system, and external levels.

Strategic Planning & Alignment

  • Contribute to the development and ongoing refinement of nursing research, QI, and EBP priorities across the health system.

Infrastructure & Process Support

  • Support the development and sharing of structures, processes, and tools that facilitate nursing research, QI, and EBP across the system.

Capacity Building & Professional Development

  • Facilitate educational opportunities, mentorship, and coaching to strengthen research, QI, and EBP competencies for nurses at all levels.

Evaluation, Impact, and Reporting

  • Participate in efforts to monitor and evaluate nursing research, QI, and EBP activities.
  • Contribute to reporting that highlights accomplishments, impact, and outcomes across sites.

Professional Practice and Accreditation Support

  • Promote alignment with Professional Practice standards (e.g., Magnet, Pathway to Excellence, Beacon, Practice Transition Accreditation Program (PTAP), Lantern) tailored to each site's professional practice journey.
  • Participate in the preparation of evidence, examples, and materials that demonstrate alignment with professional practice standards.

Other Responsibilities

  • Adapt to evolving priorities as the nursing research program expands.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

SKILLS

  • Knowledge of nursing research methodologies, QI principles, and EBP models with the ability to apply them across varied clinical settings.
  • Excellent communication skills with an ability to clearly describe complex concepts in an accessible way.
  • Ability to support nurses at all levels, across sites, to navigate the clinical inquiry process.
  • Flexibility in adapting clinical inquiry approaches to fit the scale, maturity, and resources of individual sites.
  • Familiarity with Institutional Review Board (IRB) processes, current health care trends, and nursing research priorities.
  • Proven ability to conduct and publish rigorous, ethically sound research.
  • Competency with computer applications for data analysis, writing, and information presentation; ability to learn and use new platforms as system needs evolve.
  • Proven ability to develop relationships and collaborate with nurses, leaders, interdisciplinary colleagues, and academic partners across sites.
  • Experience in teaching, mentoring, and supporting development of clinical inquiry skills.

QUALIFICATIONS-EDUCATION:
Baccalaureate or Master's in Nursing required.

Doctorate required (Nursing or related Health Care field acceptable; PhD preferred). Consideration will be given to internal candidates who are completing a doctoral program.

Must have current licensure to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of Rhode Island, Massachusetts, and/or in another state that participates in the Nurse Licensure Compact.

Certification in a specialty area is preferred; must be eligible for certification.

QUALIFICATIONS-EXPERIENCE:

  • Three to five years' direct research experience (preferred).
  • Experience with IRBapproved research, including serving as a principal investigator and navigating Institutional Review Board processes.
  • Expertise in nursing practice, education, and clinical inquiry with an ability to coach others.
  • Experience in obtaining federal and/or foundation grants (preferred).
  • Meets standard qualifications necessary to be considered for a faculty role at applicable Schools of Medicine and/or Nursing (preferred).
  • Familiarity with the Microsoft Office product Suite, including Word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint, and Visio.

SUPERVISION:
Supervises team members engaged in research and clinical inquiry.
