Overview

The Safety and Health Senior Specialist will ensure compliance with all safety and health regulations, programs and procedures with electric and steam generating power plants. The Senior Specialist will be responsible for safety programs oversight, compliance reporting, inspection and tests. The Safety and Health Senior Specialist will also assist the Environmental Specialist with field support for compliance with environmental regulations, programs and procedures as needed.

Responsibilities

Core Responsibilities
  • Provide expert guidance to plant personnel concerning safety management requirements and techniques applicable to power plant operations.
  • Train station personnel in various safety and industrial hygiene subject areas.
  • Perform frequent field safety inspections and observations of operations, maintenance, and construction activities in progress to ensure safety, regulatory compliance and personnel use of sound EHS practices.
  • Coordinate and provide oversight of city and state asbestos work activities.
  • Conduct contractor environment, health and safety program (eHASP) reviews ensuring compliance with company policy and government regulations.
  • Administer respirator fit testing for plant personnel as needed.
  • Conduct PPE hazard assessment, job safety analysis (JSA), safety inspections, self-assessments and energy control program audits.
  • Coordinate plant safety committee activities and initiatives.
  • Maintain site specific respiratory protection program, confined space, hearing conservation and PPE hazard assessment programs.
  • Develop and distribute EH&S communications to increase awareness of incidents, close calls and related improvement programs.
  • Perform other related tasks or assignments as required.

Qualifications

Required Education/Experience
  • High School Diploma/GED and 6 years Operating or EH&S experience or
  • Associate's Degree in Safety, Engineering, Physical Science, Chemistry, Physics, Biological Science and 5 years Operating or EH&S experience or
  • Bachelor's Degree in Safety, Engineering, Physical Science, Chemistry, Physics, Biological Science and 3 years Operating or EH&S experience or
  • Master's Degree in Safety, Engineering, Physical Science, Chemistry, Physics, Biological Science and 2 years Operating or EH&S experience
Relevant Work Experience
  • Experience in Operations or EH&S, required.
  • Must be a highly motivated individual, demonstrate a strong Commitment to Excellence, and understand the vital importance of personal accountability, required.
  • Demonstrated analytical skills, required.
  • Strong presentation and interpersonal skills, required.
  • Must have excellent organization skills and ability to successfully complete multiple tasks without compromising quality or timeliness, required.
  • Must possess strong oral and written communication skills and effectively interact with various levels of personnel, required.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office (word processing, spreadsheet and database applications), preferred.
  • Knowledge of OSHA regulations, preferred.
  • Knowledge of EMIS, SHIMS, and MAXIMO, preferred.
  • Power plant experience, preferred.

Licenses and Certifications
  • Driver's License Required

Physical Demands
  • Ability to push, pull, and lift up to 40 pounds
  • Possess manual dexterity and the ability to use hands for the duration of the workday
  • Ability to stoop, bend, reach, and kneel throughout the workday
Additional Physical Demands
  • The selected candidate will be assigned a System Emergency Assignment (i.e., an emergency response role) and will be expected to work non-business hours during emergencies, which may include nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • Must be able and willing to travel within Company service territory, as needed
  • Position requires extensive walking, stair and ladder climbing
  • Must be physically able to wear a respirator and work in difficult environments (heat, noise and confined spaces)
  • Ability to respond to system emergencies
  • Able to work in all weather conditions, i.e. excessive heat and/or cold
  • Ability to be approved to wear and use either a full or half-face respirator and self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA), without facial hair or other conditions that may interfere with the seal, in accordance with OSHA regulations
  • Wear necessary Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), i.e. fire-retardant clothing and safety harnesses
