Job Description

PURPOSE OF THE JOB:

This position is responsible for daily operations of underwriting unit; ensures reinstatement and policy change applications are handled promptly and accurately and according to underwriting guidelines, as well as state and federal legislation, and may also underwrite policies. This role manages workflow to meet established Service Level Agreements. Has heavy involvement in special projects, committees, and underwriting direction.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Requires sophisticated underwriting skills and abilities. Make sure proper documentation is received with new business applications and changes to policies.

  • Provides co-signs for underwriters to ensure that underwriting guidelines are being properly followed and correct decisions are being made and provides coaching and additional training as necessary.

  • Monitors productivity and adjusts assignments based on workloads to ensure smooth workflow and department service level agreements are being met.

  • Develops individual underwriter goals and in conducting performance reviews.

  • Ensures reinstatements and underwritten policy changes are processed timely and accurately.

  • Enforces best practices and makes sure employees are performing accordingly as well in accordance with policies and procedures and maintains compliance with federal, state and DOI laws and guidelines in all states.

  • Develops maintains strong relationships with Policy Change administration.

  • Conducts claim reviews as requested by the Claims Dept to determine if material misrepresentation exists on contestable claims.

  • Participates in Life Claims committee meetings representing the underwriting department.

  • Responds to DOI complaints related to the underwriting process.

  • Serves as underwriting liaison with reinsurers.

  • Conducts underwriting audits as required.

  • Manages vendor relations that are specific to the underwriting process.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High school diploma.

  • Eight to 10 years of experience.

  • Supervisory/management experience not required.

  • Additional Qualifications:

    • History $2 million or more in underwriting approval authority

    • Good understanding of underwriting systems and underwriting data feeds.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Associate or bachelor's degree is preferred, but not required. Equivalent experience may be considered in place of collegiate studies.

  • Leadership experience preferred.

  • ALMI, FLMI, or FALU preferred.

Salary Range: $90,000 to $123,000
