Inside the Role

Daimler Truck North America is the market leader and thrives as the voice of the trucking industry. In the Detroit Powertrain Test Center, we are driving the powertrain validation for our global Daimler Truck brand including conventional diesel and alternative powertrain components. In this position, you will be responsible for facilitating metrology from a technical perspective for all powertrain components. In this global capable metrology room, you would be working globally designing, setting up, executing and problem-solving high precision measurements. Systematic software scripts need to be designed and implemented to precisely measure a product dimension either verifying the design specifications or aging wear characteristics. You will be responsible for leading continuous improvement of metrology systems, tools, and processes to ensure quality assurance meets the stringent tolerances and quality standards. This will require applying mechanical, electrical and systems engineering principles to develop products, components, and systems. We are looking for a person who is solution-orientated and has excellent organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills.

Position offers a starting salary range of $90,000 - $115,000 USD

Pay offered dependent on knowledge, skills, andexperience.

What You Drive at DTNA

  • Devise and implement engineering test methodologies, test fixtures and procedures by leveraging highly sophisticated equipment.
  • Assist engineering lead with design and implement advanced systematic and mechanical metrology methods, tools, and techniques ensuring high-precision & repeatable measurements.
  • Develop and drive continuous improvement engineering initiatives for measurement processes to enhance accuracy, reduce cycle times, and minimize measurement uncertainty.
  • Collaborate closely with product design, engineering, quality assurance, and manufacturing teams to define and validate measurement requirements and support business efficiency.
  • Analyze measurement data, prepare reports, and communicate findings to cross-functional teams. Ensure all data is captured accurately and consistently.
  • Identify and troubleshoot highly technical measurement-related issues, ensuring that quality standards and production schedules are met.
  • Evaluate, select, and oversee the calibration and maintenance of equipment, ensuring its reliability and quality are compliant with manufacturing and industry standards.
  • Develop, implement, and maintain standard work instructions & best practices.
  • Exercises technical direction over assigned technicians & follows union contractual agreements.
  • Researches, evaluates, and recommends investments in technology, equipment, systems, or other assets that will enhance the test center's performance.
  • Ensure safety procedures and 5S principles are adhered to in accordance with company policy.
  • Onsite required to support validation efforts and business efficiency.

Knowledge You Should Bring

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering Technology, Electrical Engineering Technology, Computer Science Engineering, or related fields (ABET Accredited University)
  • 3-6 years of relevant industry experience required.
  • Minimum 3 years of experience with component design principles, statistical analysis, process control, and tools such as GD&T, SPC, and 3D modeling.
  • 3+ years in using CAD software (e.g., Siemens NX, or AutoCAD).
  • 2+ years working with automotive manufacturing processes, design tolerances, and quality assurance requirements.
  • Evidence of technical product knowledge in axles, electric axles, diesel engines, and transmissions.
  • Proficient in technical reports and written procedures.
  • 3+ years of experience in analyzing test results and identifying and solving the root cause of complex problems.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and inform management of any barriers.
  • Ability to work in a truly global environment with different cultures to collaborate successfully, including union & salary employees.
  • Excellent communication, organizational, analytical, and interpersonal skills.
  • Technical and digital proficient PC skills including MS Office and database tools.
  • Strong mathematical, mechanical and systematic aptitude to be able to work across various engineering disciplines.
  • Self-motivated and driven proactive approach to identifying and solving challenges.

Exceptional Candidates Might Have

  • Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering Technology, Electrical Engineering Technology, Computer Science Engineering, or related fields (ABET Accredited University).
  • 7+ years of directly applicable experience.
  • Strong knowledge of measurement systems, coordinate measuring machines (CMM), vision systems, and other advanced metrology tools.
  • Knowledge of automotive industry test technologies and capabilities.
  • Experience in advance script writing with Visual Basic & C/C++
  • Having practical knowledge and skills in using SAP software
  • Expertise in quality standards such as ISO 9001, ISO/TS 16949, AS9100 and relevant industry specifications.
