Job Summary

Civic Engagement & Service Learning (CESL) at the University of Massachusetts Amherst invites applications for a full-time non-tenure-track Lecturer beginning in September 2026. Primary responsibilities for this position include teaching and curriculum development for service-learning courses. Administrative duties to coordinate or direct CESL programs may also be assigned by the CESL Director.

Essential Functions

Teach introductory and advanced courses in civic engagement and service-learning, including core and capstone courses.

Coordinate or direct CESL programs as assigned by the CESL Director.

Contribute to the development of curricular offerings and initiatives in CESL.

Engage with UMass faculty through CESL's Faculty Fellows program.

Minimum Qualifications

Applicants must hold a Master's degree or equivalent or higher in a field related to Civic Engagement and Service Learning. Applicants must also have a strong interest in, or a proven record of excellence in teaching service-learning courses, especially courses that focus on any of the following: social justice, sustainability, equity, diversity, social identity, disability-justice, transformative learning, social entrepreneurship, participatory action research, organizing and/or community-based research methods.

Preferred Qualifications

Ph.D.

Civic Engagement & Service Learning (CESL) at UMass Amherst partners with faculty, students, and community organizations to integrate meaningful community engagement with academic learning. CESL supports courses, programs, and initiatives that foster civic engagement, social responsibility, and collaborative problem-solving.

Working Conditions

Work is performed in a standard office or indoor university environment and involves minimal physical exertion.

Work Schedule and Work Arrangement

This position will start on September 1, 2026, and the initial appointment will be for one year. The potential for a one-year reappointment is contingent upon the availability of funding and satisfactory performance.

Salary Information

The University of Massachusetts Amherst expects to pay within an approximate range between $65,550 and $80,000 for this position.

Please note:

The low-end of the pay range in all faculty searches at the University of Massachusetts Amherst is the minimum salary for the rank included in the collective bargaining agreement between the University and the Massachusetts Society of Professors, UMass Amherst/MTA/NEA.

The high-end of the pay range reflects an increase above the median of salaries at this rank within the department for faculty who may have multiple years of faculty experience.

The specific pay for this position will be determined by the University based on consideration of all relevant factors, including faculty rank and required or relevant certifications, when and if it decides to extend an offer of employment.
