Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
The mission of the UNC Hussman School of Journalism and Media is to prepare students to ignite the public conversation in our state, the nation and the world, and to understand the role of communication in fostering democracy. The school offers bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees, and administers a variety of professional development and distance-learning programs. Enrollment includes about 1,000 undergraduates and 125 graduate students in addition to professional development and distance education students. Our faculty members are international thought leaders whose scholarly and creative activities are visible and respected in the public realm.
Position Summary
The Hussman School of Journalism and Media is inviting applications for a part-time temporary Director of Photography (DP) & Assistant Producer for a short documentary.

The Director of Photography (DP) & Assistant Producer will join a documentary film project currently in development. This combined role works closely with the producer/director to shape the film's visual approach, support story development, and serve as the primary cinematographer, while stepping into assistant producer duties as needed.

The DP/Assistant Producer contributes to both the creative and technical dimensions of the project. Responsibilities include helping conceptualize the visual style; managing or overseeing the main camera, lenses, lighting, and sound setup; filming interviews, and location footage; and ensuring visual continuity across shoot days. The role also includes supporting pre-production planning, location scouting, communication with participants, and other production logistics.

This position is eligible for remote work schedule. Employees are generally required to reside in North Carolina, within a reasonable commuting distance of their assigned duty station.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
High school diploma or equivalency and one year of experience related to the area of assignment in a broadcast television, radio and emerging media environment; or equivalent combination of training and experience.
Management Preferences
Demonstrated experience working with small documentary teams

Demonstrated experience managing production workflows, including coordinating shoots and supporting impact focused production.

Ability to assist with post production, including editing a presentable rough cut or assembly of the project.

Background in journalism with an emphasis in visual communication, media production, film, or a related field.
