Idaho National Laboratory is hiring a Technical Facility Trainer to work on the Radioisotope Power Systems team. The Radioisotope Power System Department at the Idaho National Laboratory is responsible for providing unique power systems to NASA which enable space missions to function in deep space for decades. Our team works a 4x10 schedule located out of our Materials and Fuels Complex with every Friday off.

Technical Facility Trainers shape the next generation of experts, empowering them to advance groundbreaking solutions in energy, security, and pioneering technologies with work directly supporting the laboratory's legacy of innovation by equipping professionals to tackle cutting-edge challenges. You'll develop and implement technical facility-specific training and qualification programs in subjects that may include job skills training, first aid, radiological training, health and safety training, hoisting and rigging, respirator training, safeguards and security, and facility operations support. Your responsibilities include identifying training needs and analyzing training requirements, developing learning objectives, lesson plans, training support materials, evaluation standards, and written and oral examinations to ensure staff are qualified to perform their duties in accordance with regulations and procedures, reviewing technical procedures and documents to determine their impact on training programs and make recommendations for implementation or revision, establishing and maintaining examination question banks, developing and administering written, oral, and performance examinations, performing and evaluating classroom and on-the-job training, participating in support activities as assigned, evaluating training programs to ascertain requirements are met and goals are accomplished, and mentoring junior staff.

This position is located at our Materials and Fuels Complex, which hosts the core of the U.S. nuclear research and development capabilities with a diverse array of facilities designed for remote work on highly irradiated fuels and materials. A new fuel idea can be designed, fabricated, tested, and analyzed at MFC to better understand the effects of irradiation. Many groups, such as universities, industry partners, other national laboratories, international research organizations, and other federal agencies are working at MFC. Our team works a 4x10 schedule with every Friday off.

Essential Job Functions and Responsibilities:

  • Develop and implement technical facility-specific training and qualification programs.
  • Experience following a systematic approach to training.
  • Identify training needs and analyze training requirements.
  • Develop learning objectives, lesson plans, training support materials, evaluation standards, and written/oral examinations to ensure staff are qualified to perform their duties in accordance with regulations and procedures. Design training to obtain high levels of proficiency and retention.
  • Review technical procedures, reports, proposals, and other appropriate documents to determine their impact on the training programs and to make recommendations for implementation or revision based on needs or problems observed during operational or training evolutions. Implement approved recommendations.
  • Establish and maintain examination question banks. Develop, schedule, administer, grade, and evaluate written, oral tests, and performance examinations (which may include those related to simulators).
  • Perform and evaluate classroom, on-the-job, and simulator training. Ensure assigned training programs follow the requirements of program documents, company procedures, training implementation matrices, and training program plans.
  • Participate in support activities as assigned, including serving on assessment teams, investigation teams, benchmarking teams, and collaborate with MFC and laboratory wide training organizations.
  • May coordinate activities to accomplish goals with other trainers.
  • Evaluate training programs to ascertain that requirements are met and that the programs are vigorous and are accomplishing the goals established for delivery of training that prepares employees to perform their jobs. Conduct self-assessment activities required by company procedures, using results to improve the training programs. Track deficiencies and provide timely completion of actions that correct/mitigate deficiencies. Document and implement required corrective measures if needed.
  • Mentor junior staff as needed.

Required:

  • Level 2: Bachelor's degree in a relevant field in industrial education, education, engineering, or another technical field and 2 years experience. Master's and 0 years experience. PhD and 0 years experience.
  • Level 3: Bachelor's degree in a relevant field in industrial education, education, engineering, or another technical field and 5 years experience. Master's and 2 years experience. PhD and 2 years experience.
  • Relevant experience must be in technical facility (commercial or Department of Energy (DOE)) training programs or industry.
  • Must be a US Citizen and have the ability and willingness to obtain and maintain a DOE "L" clearance.

The ideal candidate will possess:

  • 3-5 years of directly related experience in nuclear operations.
  • Must meet the requirements of DOE Order 426.2 (Personnel Selection, Qualification, and Training Requirements for DOE Nuclear Facilities):
  • Baccalaureate Degree in Training or Education,
  • Experience consistent with the material being presented,
  • Instructors will have demonstrated knowledge of instructional techniques through training or experience.
  • Preferred experience in firearms, use of force, and protective force/local law enforcement agency (LLEA).
  • Must hold an active DOE "L" or "Q" clearance.
  • Must be able to qualify as Radworker I.

Job Information:

  • The pay range for this position is: Level 2 ($66,504 - $136,356)/ Level 3 ($79,344 - $162,732). At Idaho National Laboratory compensation decisions are determined using factors such as education, relevant experience, and other credentials.
  • Multi-Level: This is a multi-level posting and you will be placed at the appropriate level dependent on depth and breadth of proven experience and skills.

Physical Requirements:

While performing the duties of this classification, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, sit, stoop, kneel, bend, and work in an office and field/laboratory environment. The job requires hand/finger dexterity to keyboard or type, handle materials, manipulate tools, and reach with hands and arms. The job requires operation of job-related equipment and driving a vehicle. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Sufficient visual acuity and hearing capacity to perform the essential functions and interact with the public is required.
