Responsibilities

Job Summary
The Nurse Navigator CCR will demonstrate knowledge of NCCN clinical guidelines and specialty resources to assist patients making complex clinical decisions regarding the best recommended practice. The nurse navigator is responsible for the coordination of care and education for individuals interested in oncology clinical trials from a local, national and international referral base. The nurse navigator coordinates consultations and referrals for individuals with either advanced cancer or rare tumors where no standard therapy is available. The nurse navigator provides patient/family needs assessment, education, and support utilizing resources efficiently and effectively and collaborates with external agencies to provide community education on cancer related topics. The nurse navigator CCR assists with the development and performance of specialty educational activities, program development, patient and system protocol development and outcomes research.
Essential Functions
  • Consults with individuals interested in oncology clinical trials from a local, national and international patient population to describe role of clinical trials in an individual's treatment plan. Facilitates new patient referrals into the clinical trial program. Acts as a liaison to patients, physicians, support services and/or referring organizations to promote seamless patient care. Provides extensive education in the areas of symptom and disease management for all tumor types. Provides education and resources for patients to facilitate informed decision making and timely access to quality health and psychosocial care throughout all phases of the cancer continuum. Demonstrates knowledge of clinical guidelines (NCCN, ONS, ASCO). Possess a comprehensive knowledge base of pathophysiology of cancer, treatment modalities, disease progression, and symptom management which leads to improved patient outcomes.
  • Utilizes advanced assessment skills for early problem identification and intervention. Facilitates referrals to Cancer Center clinical programs for personalized care and provides follow-up through personal contact.
  • Reviews all referral medical records to ensure complete records for consultation and enters preliminary data in the electronic medical record. Pre-screens patients for initial consultation.
  • Increases visibility of clinical trials program by attending hospital rounds, oncology unit staff meetings, and educating staff nurses on the role of clinical trials.
  • Organizes and provides community education through HonorHealth. Collaborates with the HH Speakers Bureau to provide community education on cancer related topics. Assists with the development and marketing of public relations materials related to the cancer clinical trials.
  • Supports internal physicians with patient related communications (i.e. email with consulting physicians and office staff).
Education
  • Master's Degree - Preferred
  • Bachelor's Degree in Nursing. Required at time of hire or within 60 months of hire OR have 10 years of Registered Nurse Experience (direct or indirect) - Required
Experience
  • 2 years Oncology nursing & Clinical trials - Preferred
  • 3 years Nursing experience - Required
  • 3 years Oncology experience - Required
  • 5 years Oncology experience - Preferred
Licenses and Certifications
  • Nursing\OCN - Oncology Nurse Certification - Preferred
  • Nursing\RN - Registered Nurse - State Licensure And/Or Compact State Licensure - Required
