OUC - The Reliable One, is presently seeking a System Operator (SH) to join the Trans,Substation & Sys Protect division. At OUC, we don't just work - we're building a bright future of innovation and transformation for future generations.

We are looking for a detail driven, highly attentive professional to coordinate real time power system operations and support the safe, reliable, and economic delivery of electricity across OUC and the Florida Municipal Power Pool (FMPP).

In this role, you will monitor and operate OUC's transmission and distribution system, schedule generation resources for more than 70 power plants, coordinate interchange with partner utilities, forecast load, and direct field switching activities. You'll work closely with power plants, field crews, and utility counterparts across the state, ensuring system integrity and documenting all operational activity with precision. We're seeking someone who brings strong judgment, clear communication, and the ability to navigate complex situations with confidence and accuracy. This position is based on site at our Pershing location and follows a predictable 4on/4off rotation of 12hour shifts, alternating between day and night shifts in multi week cycles.

The ideal candidate will have:

  • Associate degree in a technical field or equivalent experience, supported by strong foundational training in math, science, and computer skills
  • Five (5) or more years of experience in utility operations or military powerrelated operations (power plant, substation, transmission, or electronics); seven (7) years required if no degree
  • Exceptional attention to detail, communication skills, and the ability to manage complex operational scenarios, including accurate logging, troubleshooting, and articulating your decisionmaking
  • Preferred: Progress toward or interest in NERC System Operator Certification, experience in military nuclear or Navy engineering/electrical roles, strong initiative in professional development, and the ability to work effectively in a fastpaced, collaborative operations environment

Salary Range: Starting at $50.65 per hour (Estimated $105,368 annually) with a structured step progression system and performance-based pay increases every 6 months up to $72.52 per hour (Estimated $150,847 annually)

Job Purpose:

Coordinate interchange with other utilities and marketers. Coordinate and schedule available resources and generation to meet the electric load of the Florida Municipal Power Pool. Monitor and operate the transmission and distribution system for OUC.

Primary Functions:

  • Coordinate and schedule interchange with other electric utilities and marketers
  • Maintain hourly and daily system records as required in a clear concise and accurate manner.
  • Arrange purchases and sales with other electric utilities and marketer according to the interchange agreements during non-working hours of the Marketers.
  • Forecasts the FMPP and OUC load for next hour and next day as needed for safe, reliable, economic operation of the FMPP and OUC.
  • Schedule and direct the loading of the generation resources of the FMPP to ensure an adequate and economic power supply for the FMPP
  • Monitor the FMPP generation resources and the OUC transmissions system to ensure safe, reliable and economic operation.
  • Coordinate all field switching affecting the OUC electric transmission system.
  • Load forecasting.
  • Monitor and control the electric transmission system of OUC to ensure that system integrity is maintained.
  • Develop safe, reliable and economic solutions to problems that occur in the FMPP generation resources and/or the OUC transmission system and distribution systems up to and including shedding customer load.
  • Maintain effective relationships with counterparts at the other systems in the State and with OUC personnel as required to efficiently and reliably operate the OUC system and the Florida Municipal Power Pool.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Technical Requirements:

  • Above average understanding of math and electric theory.
  • Basic understanding of an electric power system
  • Ability to use Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, etc.) and standard office equipment (telephone, computer, copier, etc.).
  • Must be able to distinguish colors and have good hearing.
  • Good written and oral communication skills.
  • Possess above average computer skills.

Education/ Certification/ Years of Experience Requirements:

  • Associates Degree in a technical area required - may substitute equivalent experience (two years)
  • Minimum of five (5) years of experience in utility operations or military utility operations in power plant, substation, transmission or electronic related field. Minimum of seven (7) years of experience if do not possess degree.
  • Be able to pass the NERC Certification Exam within 6 months.
  • Extensive specialized training (equivalent to 2 years college) with emphasis on math, science and computer skills.
  • Must accrue annual NERC continuing education hours in order to retain required NERC certification.

This job requires reading, typing, writing, detailed inspection and frequent sitting.
