TITLE: Senior Performance Engineer (BESS)

LOCATION: Houston, TX

EMPLOYER: AES Clean Energy Services, LLC

RESPONSIBILITIES: Lead the transition from projects under construction to operating assets. Troubleshoot systems in operation and review system performance data to identify performance problems. Perform or review capacity and performance ratio tests for projects in operation. Review production estimates and meteorological data sources for accuracy by comparing to operational data. Measure fleet performance against established KPI metrics and compare actual to forecasted performance. Produce monthly/quarterly/annual performance reports, inclusive a detailed variance analysis. Seek and evaluate proposals for analysis services and consultants where needed. Perform Job Safety Assessments and Safety Walks to identify job-site hazards. Collaborate with Operations and Engineering teams to identify underperformance and recommend improvements. Close the loop between Operations and Engineering by recording and communicating issues that can be mitigated through better design. Utilize technology such as drones, thermal imaging and advanced analytics to reduce field labor and improve operational performance.

QUALIFICATIONS: Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, energy systems, or a related field and 2 years of experience in renewable or traditional energy development or a related field

The position requires 6 months of experience in:

  • Ability to lead the transition of projects from under construction to operating assets and as-builts, IE reports, and equipment spec sheets.
  • Major equipment in Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) plants, including but not limited to PCS (power conversion system), BMS (battery management system), HVAC (Heating Ventilation and Air Conditioning), Power Plant Controllers (PPC), and fire safety system operations.
  • Provide technical support to the field services team for troubleshooting equipment during the test, utilizing the local SCADA/DAS systems or established tools like EtaPro and Nispera and compile the test results based on the agreed-upon PPA/LTSA calculation methodology.
  • Knowledge of comparing operational data with forecasted data to identify underperformance and run monthly production and cycle count reports for the asset utilizing local SCADA or DAS system data.
  • Perform an AC/DC health analysis for the site to assess the state of the asset using R/python/Excel or asset management tools such as Etapro/Nispera
  • American energy markets
  • Review commissioning test results and flag any underperformance before the site is declared operational.
  • Review PPA details and requirements, and ensure the project has the required process and documentation set up to address availability guarantees, BESS cycle-count guarantees, auxiliary power setup, and recurring facility tests.
  • Perform a high-level review of the SCADA systems to ensure all the devices are communicating properly and populate the equipment data into SAP Fiori, taking into consideration the functional location hierarchy of the plant
  • Conduct reviews of third-party BESS data analytics software.
