The Lead Medical Assistant (Lead MA) at Frontier Direct Care (FDC) is a key clinical and operational leader responsible for managing Medical Assistants (MAs) and ensuring the smooth day-to-day operations of a single clinic. This role combines hands-on patient care with people leadership, workflow ownership, and operational excellence.

The Lead MA is accountable for MA performance, clinic efficiency, and execution of high-quality, patient-centered care. This individual partners closely with the Medical Director to ensure safe clinical operations, appropriate escalation of patient needs, and a consistently exceptional member experience.

This is a full time, in-clinic opportunity based at our Leander, TX clinic

Scope of Role

  • Oversees Medical Assistants within a single clinic location
  • Directly manages up to 7 Medical Assistants
  • Supports clinic providers in delivering high-quality care

Key Responsibilities

  • Own hiring, onboarding, scheduling, and ongoing performance management of Medical Assistants
  • Manage MA schedules, PTO (planned and unplanned), and daily staffing coverage
  • Conduct regular 1:1 meetings, performance reviews (mid-year and annual), and provide real-time feedback
  • Address performance concerns, coach for improvement, and drive accountability
  • Lead training, onboarding, and ongoing clinical skills development (e.g., phlebotomy, injections, EKG)
  • Serve as the primary point of contact and escalation for MA-related questions and support
  • Perform clinical procedures including, phlebotomy and specimen processing, IV placement and infusions (if applicable), injections (IM, SQ), EKG/ECG testing, vital signs and point-of-care testing, assist with in-office procedures to ensure patient comfort and smooth workflow
  • Coordinate care with external partners (imaging centers, laboratories, specialists)
  • Escalate clinical questions, urgent concerns, and protocol clarifications to the Lead Primary Care Provider or Medical Director
  • Own day-to-day clinic operations to ensure efficient, high-quality care delivery
  • Oversee shared inbox workflows (phone, text, email, fax) to ensure timely and accurate responses
  • Support execution of population health initiatives, including member outreach, scheduling, and tracking
  • Assist in closing care gaps by coordinating preventive care, screenings, and chronic care follow-ups
  • Own inventory management across the clinic, ensuring appropriate supply levels and minimal waste
  • Order and track medical and lab supplies, maintaining appropriate levels
  • Ensure proper storage and handling of vaccines and lab supplies in accordance with safety standards
  • Maintain organized, clean, and fully stocked exam rooms and lab areas and ensure equipment functionality and coordinate maintenance or servicing as needed
  • Ensure compliance with CLIA regulations, including lab processes, documentation, and quality controls
  • Maintain ongoing audit readiness across clinical, lab, and documentation standards
  • Enforce medical record documentation standards and ensure accuracy in the EHR
  • Own clinic-level safety protocols, including infection control and emergency preparedness
  • Educate members on how to maximize their Direct Primary Care membership
  • Represent the organization at community events, health fairs, and outreach programs
  • Use secure, HIPAA-compliant communication tools (including personal device use) for timely coordination
Requirements

Required Qualifications

  • Minimum 5 years of experience as a Medical Assistant, with demonstrated leadership responsibilities
  • Prior experience managing, leading, or supervising Medical Assistants
  • Experience in primary care, family practice, and/or internal medicine preferred
  • Experience providing care across the lifespan, including pediatrics
  • Proficiency in a variety of skills including phlebotomy, IV placement (if applicable), injections (IM and SQ), EKG/ECG, Point-of-care testing
  • Working knowledge of Electronic Health Record (EHR/EMR) systems and experience working with a variety of systems
  • Active BLS certification (or ability to obtain within 30 days of hire)
  • Experience managing clinic inventory and supplies
  • Ability to work autonomously while collaborating closely with providers
  • Adaptable and comfortable in a fast-paced, growth-oriented environment

Preferred Qualifications

  • Certified Medical Assistant (CMA, RMA, or equivalent credential)
  • Previous leadership or supervisory experience in a clinical setting
  • Experience in value-based care or membership-based models
  • Experience supporting quality improvement initiatives
