Description

The Medical Writer, HIV will be responsible for developing and delivering high-quality, scientifically accurate, and strategically aligned materials that communicate the company's HIV data and scientific narrative across a range of internal and external audiences.

This individual will support conference and peer-reviewed publications and external medical engagement materials. The role requires deep scientific understanding, strong writing and communication skills, and the ability to translate complex clinical and scientific data into clear, compelling, and compliant materials that advance the company's medical and scientific strategy in HIV.

The main objective of hiring this medical writer is to accelerate the development of many scientific materials and publications. The chosen candidate should demonstrate writing efficiency, strong ability to multi-task while consistently meeting short deadlines. Responsibilities will include following up with individual contributors and assisting with submissions to congresses and journals. Project management and stakeholder coordination will also be important aspects of the role. Moreover, we plan to implement multiple process improvement cycles and expect this individual to help identify opportunities for increased efficiency and sustained quality enhancement.

We expect this role to embrace GenAI and be Tech-enabled to improve efficiency and improve timelines of deliverables. Good understanding how to leverage digital and tech in medical writing is desired.

Key Responsibilities

  • Operate under the strategic direction of the Scientific Communications Director, ensuring that all materials are scientifically accurate, strategically aligned, and reflective of cross-functional priorities.
  • Develop, write, and edit abstracts, posters, oral presentations, and manuscripts for submission to scientific congresses and peer-reviewed journals.
  • Knowledgeable or willing to become knowledgeable in the latest GenAI and digital support tools available to expedite manuscript development process, poster development, abstract writing, and development of scientific materials.
  • Project manage the scientific communication process - including manuscript submission, abstract writing, poster generation, post-congress deck synthesis. This will include managing internal stakeholders, external authors and contributors, congress portals, and journal interactions.
  • Maintain compliance with Good Publication Practice (GPP) guidelines, ICMJE standards, and internal publication policies.
  • Develop and maintain external-facing scientific materials to support MSLs and other medical teams, including:
    • Core and modular scientific slide decks for external engagements
    • Narrative decks summarizing key clinical and scientific updates
    • Talking points for use during external scientific presentations
    • Creation of new and creative means to communicate the data effectively to external audiences.
  • Provide copy editing and quality control for scientific and medical content, ensuring clarity, precision, and consistency of style and tone.
  • Contribute to process improvements, template development, and adherence to publication and material review workflows.
  • Working with the team on a continuous quality improvement plan to find the optimal workflow for manuscript development and publication, abstract development, and scientific communications of data.

Qualifications

  • Advanced degree required: A university/college degree in a biomedical or life science discipline. An advanced degree (eg, Masters, PharmD, MD, or PhD) is preferred.
  • Minimum of 3-5 years of experience in medical writing within the pharmaceutical, biotechnology, or medical communications field.
  • Therapeutic area expertise in HIV preferred
  • Demonstrated experience writing for both scientific publications and field medical or external-facing materials.
  • Knowledge or understanding of the acceptable uses of GenAI in scientific communications.
  • Good project management experience.
  • Continuous Quality Improvement experience.
  • Certification as a Certified Medical Publication Professional (CMPP) preferred
  • Excellent attention to detail and ability to read and synthesize complex scientific and clinical data into clear, concise, and audience-appropriate messaging.
  • Familiarity with AMA style guidelines required. Experience with copy editing preferred.
  • Proficiency in reference management and document collaboration tools (e.g., EndNote, Datavision, Veeva, Microsoft Office suite).
