Job Description

The Assistant Controller supports the Plant Controller and serves as a key member of the plant finance and accounting team. This role is responsible for assisting in the execution of financial processes, ensuring accurate and timely financial reporting, and maintaining strong internal controls.

Working closely with the Controller and plant leadership, the Assistant Controller helps drive financial performance, supports operational decision-making, and contributes to cost discipline and process improvements. This is a hands-on role requiring a strong foundation in cost accounting, inventory valuation, and manufacturing finance, with opportunities for growth into broader leadership responsibilities.

Key Responsibilities

Financial Reporting & Close

  • Support and help lead the month-end close process to ensure timely and accurate financial results
  • Prepare and review journal entries, account reconciliations, and supporting schedules
  • Assist in the preparation of plant-level financial statements in accordance with US GAAP
  • Analyze financial results and provide variance explanations to the Controller and plant leadership
  • Ensure integrity and accuracy of financial data within ERP systems

Cost Accounting & Operational Finance

  • Support the standard cost system, including:
  • Perform analysis on scrap, yield, labor efficiency, throughput, and overhead utilization
  • Assist in identifying cost savings opportunities and margin improvement initiatives
  • Partner with Operations to support productivity and efficiency improvements

Working Capital & Asset Management

  • Support inventory management processes, including cycle counts and physical inventory
  • Monitor inventory valuation, reserves, and accuracy
  • Assist in fixed asset accounting and capital expenditure tracking
  • Contribute to initiatives aimed at improving working capital and cash flow

Compliance & Internal Controls

  • Support internal and external audit processes, including preparation of audit schedules
  • Ensure adherence to GAAP, SOX (if applicable), and corporate policies
  • Assist in maintaining and improving internal controls and accounting procedures
  • Identify opportunities to strengthen processes and enhance compliance

Leadership & Team Support

  • Provide day-to-day guidance and support to accounting staff as needed
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams including Operations, Supply Chain, and Finance
  • Help foster a culture of accountability, continuous improvement, and teamwork
  • Serve as a backup to the Plant Controller when needed

Qualifications

Required

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance (CPA preferred, MBA a plus)
  • 5-8 years of progressive accounting/finance experience
  • Experience in a manufacturing environment with exposure to plant-level accounting
  • Strong understanding of cost accounting and inventory management
  • Very good understanding of GAAP and internal controls (SOX experience a plus)
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel skills
  • Experience with manufacturing ERP systems
  • Experience supporting audits and financial reporting in a corporate environment
  • Prior experience in a lead or senior accounting role
