Role Summary

As Senior Counsel, Product, you will serve as a foundational legal support in Rivian's mission to scale the future of electric mobility. This is a high-impact role designed for a versatile, growth-oriented attorney who thrives at the intersection of cutting-edge EV technology and complex consumer ecosystems. In this role, you will provide mission-critical counsel as we launch and scale our next generation of products, including the highly anticipated R2 mid-size SUV. Your influence will span the entire product lifecycle-from advising on software-driven innovation and e-commerce strategies to navigating the intricacies of automotive finance, leasing, and insurance. As a key partner to our global sales and product teams, you won't just identify risk; you will build the legal frameworks that allow Rivian to move fast, disrupt the status quo, and bring sustainable adventure to the masses.


Responsibilities

As Senior Counsel, Product, you will report to the Associate General Counsel for Consumer, Product, and Sales and will work cross-functionally with stakeholders to:

  • Provide legal guidance and support for the development, launch, and maintenance of new consumer products.
  • Play a critical role in ensuring the compliance and legal integrity of our evolving suite of products, including battery electric vehicles, accessories, software, and merchandise.
  • Provide comprehensive legal support for motor vehicle sales and lease transactions, including vehicle remarketing, and motor vehicle dealership operations.
  • Advise on all aspects of retail and internet-based retail transactions, ensuring compliance with applicable laws and regulations.
  • Support consumer motor vehicle financial services, specifically retail installment sales and leasing, navigating complex regulatory landscapes.
  • Ensure compliance of Rivian's products and sales processes with key regulations such as Regulation Z, Regulation M, FCRA, ECOA, and FTC rules and guidelines, including Section 5 of the Federal Trade Commission Act on Unfair, or Deceptive Acts or Practices, and customer fraud checks and thorough screenings against OFAC and other sanctions lists.
  • Review and advise on marketing and sales executions.
  • Draft, review, and negotiate commercial contracts with our client partners, safeguarding Rivian's interests.
  • Develop and deliver engaging training programs and materials for vehicle salespersons, equipping them with a clear understanding of their compliance obligations.
  • Cultivate trusted relationships with internal business teams responsible for global sales, marketing, and retail operations to proactively identify and mitigate legal, compliance, and counterparty risks across all customer touchpoints.
  • Collaborate with software design and engineering teams to ensure Rivian's software and third-party partnerships adhere to all relevant legal requirements regarding customer interactions.
  • Proactively develop and manage legal and regulatory resources, including knowledge repositories, policies, processes, and guidelines, to support Rivian's expanding commercial footprint.

Qualifications

We're looking for someone who brings:

  • Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited law school.
  • Active bar membership in at least one U.S. state and eligibility to practice law in-house.
  • A minimum of six (6) years of legal experience with a strong emphasis on motor vehicle sales, consumer finance, retail transactions (both physical and online), and/or commercial contracting.
  • Experience and a strong understanding of motor vehicle transactions, retail operations, consumer financial services, and/or commercial contracting. In-house legal experience is strongly preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience developing and delivering compliance training programs.
  • Exceptional written and oral communication, negotiation, and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong business acumen and the ability to provide pragmatic, solutions-oriented legal advice.
  • The ability to thrive in a fast-paced, dynamic environment, working both independently and collaboratively with cross-functional teams.
  • A client-centric approach with a focus on achieving team success.Willingness to travel 10% of the time.

Pay Disclosure

The salary range for this role is USD 156,200-195,300 for Atlanta, Michigan and Illinois-based applicants and USD 171,100-204,600 for SoCal-based applicants. This is the lowest-to-highest salary we, in good faith, believe we would pay for this role at the time of this posting. An employee's position within the salary range will be based on several factors, including but not limited to specific competencies, relevant education, qualifications, certifications, experience, skills, geographic location, shift, and organizational needs.
