The opportunity

You will help advance the university's reputation through proactive media engagement, strategic storytelling, and responsive public relations support. You will be responsible for research, drafting press releases and university news, managing day-to-day media inquiries, pitching stories, and media monitoring and reporting.

What you'll do:

  • Draft press releases, media advisories, and statements that reflect the university's strategic priorities and mission.

  • Pitch story ideas to local, regional, and trade media.

  • Manage media lists, track beat reporters and keywords, and cultivate press relationships.

  • Respond to routine media inquiries and coordinate interviews and media requests.

  • Identify storytelling opportunities and develop written content including features, profiles, and news stories that elevate the university's reputation.

  • Support crisis communications by drafting holding statements, FAQs, and updates; monitor coverage and sentiment.

  • Track and compile daily media coverage; prepare reports and briefings for leadership.

  • Conduct research to support messaging, media outreach, and reputation insights.

  • Partner with internal teams to ensure alignment on messaging and timing of external communications.

  • Attendance, punctuality, and reliability are essential functions of this role.

  • Other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

What we're looking for:

  • 3+ years of experience in media relations, public relations, journalism, or communications.

  • Bachelor's degree

    • Equivalent of experience in lieu of degree is acceptable.

  • Strong news judgement, writing, editing, and storytelling skills.

  • Experience pitching media and securing earned coverage.

  • Ability to work under tight deadlines and manage multiple projects.

  • Experience in higher education, nonprofit, agency, news, or similar fast-paced environment preferred.

Compensation

The annual pay range for this position is $64,283.00 - $102,872.00. Actual offer will be based on skills, qualifications, experience and internal equity, in addition to relevant business considerations. We expect this position to be hired in the following target hiring range $71,033.00 - $96,103.00.
