Paralegal II

Department of Law

Litigation Practice

Number of Positions: 2

(Additional vacancies possible pending budget approval)

Starting Salary: $68,616.00 annually

This position is open to the public and all current City employees covered under the City's collective bargaining agreement with AMERICAN FEDERATION OF STATE, COUNTY, AND MUNICIPAL EMPLOYEES (AFSCME) - BARGAINING UNIT 1, 3, 4 & 5. Only employees in City job titles in this bargaining unit are eligible to bid.

Under supervision, functions at the senior level, providing paraprofessional legal and administrative support to attorneys, and performs related duties as required.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

  • Assists attorneys in all phases of pre-trial, trial, and post-trial functions, including those ranging from a routine to a complex nature.
  • Collects and organizes information and legal documents to respond to subpoenas and requests for information and to assist in motions, trials, and depositions.
  • Reviews and examines legal digests to conduct legal research for attorneys' use in court proceedings.
  • Researches and analyzes statutes, judicial decisions, and legal codes for attorneys' use in court proceedings.
  • Prepares and summarizes legal documents (e.g., summonses, motions, subpoenas).
  • Abstracts depositions, briefings, and complex transcripts to summarize statements of deponents.
  • Prepares and writes documents for answers and discovery and updates relevant parties on status of discovery.
  • Prepares and maintains documents for motions, pleadings, and claims.
  • Interviews witnesses to obtain necessary testimony.
  • Indexes and files court documents and depositions for record keeping purposes.
  • Monitors and tracks attorneys' caseloads to ensure effective case management.
  • Prepares exhibits and documents for use in court.
  • Appears in state or federal court to file documents on behalf of the City.
  • Delivers legal or proprietary documents to offices, personnel, and courtrooms, as required.
  • Coordinates and oversees routine legal functions of subordinate staff, as required.
  • Trains and orientates paralegal staff in office methods and procedures, as required.
  • Responds to defendants' inquiries, distributes notices of motion and orders to defendants, and prepares outgoing documents for mailing.
  • Notarizes documents, as required.

Additional duties may be required for this position.

Location: 2 N. LaSalle St., Chicago, IL 60602

Days: Monday through Friday

Hours: 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM

Qualifications

Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor's degree, and a paralegal certificate from a paralegal training program accredited by the American Bar Association,

OR

graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor's degree or higher, plus one (1) year of work experience as a legal assistant or paralegal,

OR

graduation from an accredited college with an associate degree, plus (2) years of work experience as a legal assistant or paralegal,

OR

graduation from an accredited college or university with a juris doctor from a law school accredited by the American Bar Association,

OR

completion of a paralegal certificate obtained from a training institution accredited by the American Bar Association, plus one (1) year of work experience as a legal assistant or paralegal,

OR

five (5) years of work experience as a legal assistant or paralegal.

SELECTION REQUIREMENTS

This position requires applicants to successfully complete an interview which will include a written exercise and/or skills assessment as part of the interview. The interviewed candidate(s) possessing the qualifications best suited to fulfill the responsibilities of the position, based on the oral and written parts of the interview will be selected.

NOTE: Applicants will be required to provide a writing sample.

Writing Sample Criteria

Applicants must submit a writing sample prior to their scheduled interviews. All writing samples submitted in consideration for employment must comply with the following criteria:

I. The sample may either be a professional project report, academic project report, an official communication related to a professional or academic project, or a work-related report or communication.

II. Each writing sample submitted must be no more thanfive (5) pages.

III. Each writing sample must be accompanied by a cover page explaining:

A. The sample's original purpose (e.g. a writing class, a professional project, a memorandum for an employer).

B. When (MM/DD/YYYY)and for whom the sample was written.

C. The extent of editing by any third party (if any).

D. If the writing sample is an excerpt from a larger document, identify that larger document and provide context, if necessary.

If an applicant chooses to submit a writing sample containing confidential or privileged information, the applicant must identify the steps taken (redactions, name changes, or consent from the client or employer) to preserve the confidential or privileged nature of the document.
