THE POSITION

Start a meaningful career as a Corrections Mail Inspector with SCI Chester. This position with the Department of Corrections gives you the opportunity to support safety and order within the facility. You will help ensure that mail is processed properly and securely every day. Your work will make a positive difference for both staff and inmates.

DESCRIPTION OF WORK
-
This position supports the secure and orderly flow of inmate and business mail within the institution. You will help protect safety by inspecting mail, identifying restricted items, and following established procedures. As a Corrections Mail Inspector, you will perform the following duties:
- Mail Inspection: Open and examine letters, packages, periodicals, and books to check for contraband and ensure compliance with policies
- Restricted Items: Identify correspondence that involves inmates at other facilities, former inmates, victims, or others on the restricted list
- Contraband Decisions: Consult supervisor on how to handle prohibited materials and possible violations of postal or agency rules
- Legal Mail: Use tracking systems and prepare call outs while processing privileged correspondence according to regulations
- Financial Items: Remove and record money orders and cashier checks for deposit and return personal checks to senders
- Mailroom Operations: Assist with sorting, packaging, operating postage equipment, and handling deliveries for inmate and business mail

Work Schedule and Additional Information:
- Full-time employment, 37.5-hour work week
- Work hours are 6:00 AM to 2:00 PM, Monday - Friday, with a 30-minute lunch.
- Telework: You will not have the option to telework in this position.
- Salary: Selected candidates who are new to employment with the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania will begin employment at the starting annual salary of $40,685.00 (before taxes).

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY

QUALIFICATIONS Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:
- Two years of clerical experience, including one year in the field of corrections; or
- Any combination of experience and/or training which provides the Required Knowledges, Skills, and Abilities.
Additional Requirements:
- Successful completion of basic training in Elizabethtown, PA is required.
- You must be able to perform essential job functions.

- You must pass a background investigation and meet Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS) compliance requirements.
