What this job involves:

The Generalist Technician is a hands-on technical role perfect for self-motivated individuals eager to build a rewarding career in the thriving facilities management industry. You'll be responsible for the day-to-day operation, inspection, maintenance, and repair of critical building systems including HVAC, mechanical, electrical, and plumbing infrastructure across assigned facilities. This position offers an excellent opportunity to expand your technical skillset while working in a dynamic mixed-use environment that includes both laboratory and office spaces. Working alongside experienced operations managers and senior mechanics, you'll tackle diverse maintenance challenges-from routine preventive maintenance and filter changes to complex system repairs involving chillers, boilers, fume hoods, and biosafety cabinets. Your responsibilities will span both interior and exterior building systems, requiring versatility and problem-solving abilities as you respond to work orders, conduct facility inspections, and ensure optimal building performance. If you're technically skilled, safety-conscious, and motivated to grow within a professional maintenance environment that values continuous learning and operational excellence, this role provides the platform to develop your expertise while contributing to critical facility operations that support cutting-edge research and business activities.

What your day-to-day will look like:

Perform maintenance and repair of building mechanical systems including HVAC equipment (chillers, air handling units, rooftop units, fan coils), pumps, motors, exhaust fans, boilers, and hot water systems while completing preventive maintenance tasks and responding to work orders across mixed laboratory and office facilities.

Conduct facility inspections and due diligence efforts, documenting as-found conditions that impact client occupancy and operations, then performing repairs to interior and exterior areas including walls, flooring, fixtures, roofing systems, lighting, and furniture.

Maintain and service specialized laboratory equipment including fume hoods, biosafety cabinets, vacuum pumps, air compressors, generators, and exhaust systems while adhering to safety protocols specific to laboratory environments.

Perform basic electrical maintenance including lighting replacement, ballast changes, generator service, UPS systems, and lighting controls, plus basic plumbing repairs such as sink, faucet, and toilet repairs along with light carpentry tasks as needed.

Navigate web-based work order systems to update and close work orders promptly, complete required safety trainings, conduct vehicle and equipment safety inspections, escalate issues to management in a timely manner, and maintain compliance with all safety procedures and regulatory requirements.

Required Qualifications:
  • Advanced working knowledge of building mechanical systems including HVAC equipment (chillers, pumps, motors, air handling units, rooftop units, fan coils) and associated exhaust systems with hands-on maintenance and repair experience.
  • High school diploma or equivalent with strong customer service and interpersonal skills, ability to communicate effectively with building occupants, and legible handwriting for documentation purposes.
  • Proficiency using Microsoft Outlook (email and calendar), Word, and Excel for work order management, documentation, and communication with team members and management.
  • Physical capability to lift up to 50 pounds, work from heights using ladders and lifts, and perform frequent climbing, bending, lifting, kneeling, stooping, and overhead work in various facility environments.
  • Understanding of Good Documentation Practices (GDP), ability to complete Hazard Assessments, comprehension of PPE requirements and safety signage, and commitment to complying with all safety procedures and hazardous materials handling protocols.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Minimum 5 years of hands-on experience in general building repair and maintenance including basic plumbing repairs, basic electrical work, and broad facilities maintenance responsibilities across commercial or industrial environments.
  • Minimum 2 years of specific HVAC experience including system troubleshooting, preventive maintenance, component replacement (filters, belts, coils), and repair of heating and cooling equipment.
  • General working knowledge of boiler systems, hot water heating systems, and experience maintaining specialized laboratory equipment such as fume hoods, biosafety cabinets, vacuum pumps, compressors, and laboratory exhaust systems.
  • Understanding of basic electrical systems including uninterruptible power supplies (UPS), emergency generators, lighting controls, and electrical distribution with ability to perform routine electrical maintenance safely.
  • EPA 608 Certification for refrigerant handling or willingness to obtain certification, plus availability for rotating on-call duty to respond to emergency facility issues outside standard business hours.
