POSITION SUMMARY: The Research Fellow will conduct translational ocular immunology research focused on immune mechanisms of retinal injury, inflammation, neurodegeneration, and repair. The fellow will perform in vivo and in vitro studies using surgical parabiosis, immune-cell tracing, ocular injury models, retinal disease models, flow cytometry, imaging, and multi-omic approaches to define how microglia and peripheral immune cells contribute to retinal remodeling and degeneration. Responsibilities will include designing and executing experiments, analyzing and presenting data, reviewing literature, assisting with animal protocols and grants, and preparing manuscripts for publication. The goal of the position is to support the development of novel immune-targeted molecular therapies for retinal degenerative and inflammatory diseases. No Licenses and Credentials Experience Knowledge, Skills and Abilities ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Read, analyze and summarize published literature Perform experiments and animal surgery Maintain animal colonies Design and execute in vitro and in vivo experiments Perform multi-omic experiments Undertake relevant coursework if required by mentor Attend relevant meetings Write and revise animal protocols and amendments Meet regularly with mentor to review project progress and milestones Plan and deliver a seminar on the project Take administrative (inventory, purchasing, etc.) responsibilities in the lab when necessary Write a final report or submit a manuscript to a peer-reviewed journal describing the project and results Assist in grant writing EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Doctoral degree (MD or PhD) with more than 1 year of lab experience. WORKING CONDITIONS: Lab setting. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Possible lifting of 10 to 20 lbs., depending on nature of chosen project(s).
