DESCRIPTION

The UCSD Department of Pharmacology is one of two basic science units in the School of Medicine where world-class researchers investigate the effects of chemical interventions on biological systems. The faculty are internationally renowned for their strength in elucidating basic cellular and molecular mechanisms of signal transduction that lead to innovative drug target identification and ultimately to cutting edge drug discovery. The faculty also play a major role in medical and graduate student training, providing educational and programmatic offerings that span several disciplines, and provide diversity to meet the interests of a broad spectrum of students and scholars. More than one hundred trainees at the graduate student and postdoctoral level, as well as a staff of more than 50 research technicians and department administrators interact closely with the faculty. The diverse mix of ages, backgrounds, and talents creates arobust work environment with challenging career opportunities and a commitment to continued growth potential. Under direction, incumbent will engage in difficult and complex research projects in collaboration with PI, making important original contributions pertaining to signaling and new therapeutics in head and neck cancer research. Incumbent to consult with PI on the nature and general plan of approach to research problems; read and abstract scientific articles pertaining to prosecution of broad research problems related to the area of in head and neck cancer research and proceed without specific direction to organize research projects. Work out all techniques of the experimental process including the design, planning, troubleshooting and analysis. This position is afforded significant latitude for complex research projects, decision-making and independent judgment. In consultation with PI, analyze data and contribute content for the preparation of laboratory manuscripts for publication. Write conclusions to illustrate and organize experimental results and co- author articles. Draft/edit scientific abstracts. Responsible for writing research grant proposals, including updates and progress reports.Manage all research related items of manuscript submission and grant proposal processing. Review and edit manuscripts & proposals for accuracy. Provide work direction to lab personnel. Liaison to the Pharmacology Business Office. Other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Extensive theoretical and experimental knowledge in biology, microbiology, molecular biology, biochemistry and/or related science acquired through a combination of education and experience.

  • Demonstrated ability to contribute original ideas in the planning and design of experiments. Demonstrated ability to develop and adapt new techniques and modify established protocols to further the experiments. Interpretation of data and results of the experiments for publication or grant applications, while also recognizing and investigating misleading results.

  • Demonstrable skill and extensive experience in a variety of cellular and molecular biology lab techniques.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of NIH grant procedures and the ability to write large NIH grants, assemble and coordinate large multi-institutional grants.

  • Demonstrated ability to write and publish articles for scientific journals.

  • Devise sophisticated and complex modifications to accomplish research results

  • Demonstrated experience interpreting, troubleshooting and analyzing results of scientific experiments.

  • Excellent positive interpersonal skills. Ability to work with faculty, students and staff in a diverse group.

  • Knowledge of and adherence to laboratory safety regulations, requirements and procedures.

  • Advanced knowledge and experience using Mac and PC computers and scientific software for operating equipment and data analysis including Adobe Photoshop, MS PowerPoint, MS Excel and MS Word.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Knowledge of UC policies and procedures governing purchasing and personnel. Extensive knowledge of State and Federal regulations and requirements.
SPECIAL CONDITIONS
  • Employment is subject to a criminal background check.

  • Must be willing to work a flexible schedule, including overtime as needed, for certain experiments.

  • Must be willing and able to work with mice.

  • Must be willing and able to work safely in environment of possible exposure to radiation and other biological and chemical hazards.

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $78,229 - $125,903 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $37.47 - $60.30

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
