Summary:

This position leads technician training efforts, identifies and executes process improvement opportunities, and prioritizes workflow. In addition, the position provides support to the pharmacist by reviewing, compounding and dispensing medications. All work is carried out under the supervision of a licensed Pharmacist.

The ideal candidate demonstrates experience adapting to a highly dynamic environment, with flexibility to learn and adapt to new processes. Willingness to make teamwork a priority is a must.

This position qualifies for our Pharmacy Technician Incentive Program, which includes $5000 in commitment incentives spread over a two-year period. Payment is made after six months, one year, and two years of employment.

Working Conditions:

  • Performs work in hospital-based and centralized investigational drug services pharmacy operations.
  • May require standing for extended periods and handling hazardous drugs using appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Regular lifting and movement of medication shipments and pharmacy supplies, up to 30+ lbs.
  • Performs duties across the UNC Investigational Drug Services hub-and-spoke enterprise, with work/staffing assignments at both the UNC Medical Center in Chapel Hill and the UNC Central Investigational Drug Services location in Morrisville based on operational needs.
  • Schedule: Mon-Fri, 7:30am - 4:00pm or 8:00am - 4:30pm.

    Responsibilities:

    • Performs expert training of new employees, educating them in job-specific functions.
    • Develops training materials, and completes training documentation.
    • Operates independently on process improvement projects. Actively implements identified solutions.
    • Assists the pharmacist in reprioritizing daily workflow to maintain patient care. Assists with schedule adjustments.
    • Compounds and/or prepares medications (sterile products, oral, topical, controlled substances, etc.) as authorized by a physician, under the supervision of a licensed Pharmacist.
    • Documents pharmaceutical activities for medications and equipment.
    • Ensures accuracy of data.
    • Responds to and triages requests from research teams and sponsors for assistance with pharmacy services questions and requests.
    • Orders, receives, restocks, and rotates inventory, and completes expiration date management.
    • Assures regulatory compliance for medication storage areas, including inspections and/or controlled substance inventories, USP797 and other regulatory documentation as required.
    • Assures drug accountability accuracy.
    • Promptly addresses and responds to follow-up queries from monitoring visits and audits.

    Education Requirements:
    * None required as long as other position qualifications are met. Completion of an academic pharmacy technician training program preferred.
    Licensure/Certification Requirements:
    * Registration with the NC Board of Pharmacy unless enrolled in a PharmD program.
    *CPhT from PTCB or ExCPT from NHA unless enrolled in a PharmD program.
    Professional Experience Requirements:
    * Two years of pharmacy technician experience required.
    Knowledge/Skills/and Abilities Requirements:

    • Strong documentation and data management abilities.
    • Ability to work independently and prioritize tasks in a fast-paced environment.
    • Effective communication and interpersonal skills.
    • Experience communicating professionally via email.
    • Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel).
    • Ability to lift up to 30 pounds.

    • Proficiency with pharmacy and clinical trial management systems.
