Overview:

We are seeking an Instrument Support Electrical Engineer to support the High Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR) neutron scattering instruments and associated infrastructure. This role performs hands-on electrical design and troubleshooting - panel layouts, wiring schematics, power distribution, and cable/equipment specification - to ensure safe, reliable, and efficient operation of HFIR Beamline Operations (HBO) systems, consistent with the safety and regulatory standards that govern reactor facility operations. Work spans power distribution systems, electrical design for beamline instruments and conventional facilities, and experimental equipment support.

This positionresidesin the HFIR Instrument Support Group in the HFIR Beamline Operations Section, Neutron Scattering Division,Neutron Sciences DirectorateatOak Ridge National Laboratory(ORNL).

Major Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Design and develop electrical systems - panel layouts, wiring schematics, cable assemblies, and equipment specifications.

  • Troubleshoot and diagnose electrical cabinets, power distribution systems, circuit boards, and embedded control hardware to ensure compliant, reliable field installations.

  • Evaluate electrical hardware and verify sizing, load ratings, and calculations against applicable codes and standards (NEC, UL).

  • Develop andmaintaintechnical documentation, including electrical drawings, schematics, test plans, and work instructions.

  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to execute work in compliance with HFIR Neutron Scattering work control, configuration management, and safety requirements.

Basic Qualifications:

  • ABSdegree in electrical engineering, electrical engineering technology, or a related field.

  • A minimum of 5 years of experience in electrical power distribution design, panel layout, or industrial/facility electrical systems, including field troubleshooting and installation.

  • Working knowledge of electrical engineering principles, electrical codes, and applicable industry standards.

  • Experience interpreting and developing electrical drawings and technical documentation.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience supporting industrial, research, laboratory, or facility electrical systems.

  • Experience supporting electrical design and construction projects.

  • Knowledge of power distribution systems and power electronics.

  • Experience troubleshooting electrical or electronic systems using standard laboratory or diagnostic equipment.

  • Proficiencywith AutoCAD or similar drafting/design software.

  • Familiarity with DOE laboratory environments, nuclear facilities, or regulated technical operations.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to work effectively in multidisciplinary teams.

Special Requirements:

  • Work involves various physical requirements and working conditions. As such, a pre-hire physical will berequiredafter offer.
