About the Department

As one of the oldest medical schools in the country, the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine (COM) has a reputation for training best-in-class health care professionals and developing cutting-edge procedures and research that improves the health and clinical care of patients. In partnership with the UC Health academic healthcare system and Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center, College of Medicine's faculty are transforming the world of medicine every day.

Job Overview

The College of Medicine Center for Student Success is seeking to hire an Academic Advisor/Senior Academic Advisor to work with the Medical Sciences undergraduate students, staff, and faculty to meet our program's objectives.

The Center for Student Success (CSS) works to identify and recruit a student body of future leaders in the fields of clinical practice (including medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, and other healthcare professions), medical research, and public health.

The selected candidate will provide academic advising, intervention, support services, and programming to students. The position requires a high degree of accountability, responsibility, a strong student-centric approach, and a collaborative mindset. The individual will be expected to exercise sound judgment as it relates to dealing with students, faculty, staff, administrative personnel, and parents.

Essential Functions

*Advise both in person and online current and prospective students on how to meet their educational and career goals through best practices in advising and appropriate referrals to student support services.
*Create academic plans, maintain accurate and up-to-date student records, meet with students to assess and discuss progress, and support students in meeting COM Undergraduate Program requirements.
*Evaluate student information and utilize data to facilitate enrollment and registration.
*In partnership with faculty, assess advanced standing credit, substitute courses to meet graduation requirements, and create degree audit exceptions. Facilitate and/or complete degree certification.
*Give presentations to various classes/populations as well as new student advising at orientation. The Advisor may be called upon to give Admissions presentations to prospective program applicants.
*Work closely with faculty and staff on programmatic and student issues.
*Engage in ongoing professional development and training, both at UC and through professional organizations, to maintain up-to-date knowledge about advising practices, policies, technologies, and student success needs at the university and in higher education.
*Function as a member of the Center for Student Success team to ensure the proper workflow and outcomes.
*Collaborate with UC advising community colleagues to advance quality advising practice.
*Recommend policy to best meet student needs.
*Attend related meetings and functions.
*May teach one or more college-level courses each year.
*May provide direct and/or indirect supervision to student workers and/or ambassadors (i.e., hiring, evaluation, disciplinary action, scheduling, etc.) May advise student organization groups.
*May lead a programmatic area of oversight and planning for a student success program or function within the Center for Student Success. Conceptualize, develop, implement, and evaluate the program. Train new academic advisors and other unit staff on key student service functions.
*The Advisor must be detail-oriented and have strong interpersonal communication and problem-solving skills. Must be able to retain a high volume of programmatic, college, and university related information while having the ability to critically think through complex situations.
