Job Description: The Critical Utilities Technician is responsible for the safe, reliable, and compliant operation, maintenance, and monitoring of critical utility systems that support GMP manufacturing operations. Utility systems may include boilers, steam, water treatment, purified water, wastewater, cooling towers, compressed air, clean steam, and related infrastructure. Technicians support preventative and corrective maintenance, troubleshooting, documentation, inspections, and continuous improvement initiatives while ensuring compliance with GMP, safety, environmental, and regulatory requirements. Key Responsibilities
- Operate, monitor, and maintain critical utility systems to ensure safe and continuous operation.
- Perform preventive and corrective maintenance on steam, water, air, and related utility systems.
- Troubleshoot equipment and system issues to maintain reliability and compliance.
- Document maintenance activities, inspections, testing, and performance data using SAP CMMS and related systems.
- Support audits, inspections, investigations, and continuous improvement efforts.
- Follow all GMP, safety, environmental, and PPE requirements.
- Read and interpret blueprints, schematics, and technical drawings.
- Coordinate with Maintenance, Quality, Operations, Engineering, and EHS teams to support site operations.
- Identify and escalate risks impacting safety, compliance, or system performance.
Additional Responsibilities by Level Technician I
- Operate small high-pressure boiler systems and utility equipment.
- Perform basic mechanical repairs, welding, fabrication, and equipment maintenance.
- Support housekeeping and GMP utility area standards.
Technician II
- Support operation and maintenance of water treatment, purified water, wastewater, cooling tower, clean steam, and boiler systems.
- Perform water chemistry monitoring and treatment adjustments.
- Assist with advanced troubleshooting and reliability improvements.
- Support WFI systems, industrial plumbing, pipefitting, and higher-level boiler operations when qualified.
Technician III
- Serve as a subject matter expert for critical utility systems.
- Lead advanced troubleshooting, diagnostics, and root cause investigations.
- Utilize predictive maintenance tools including vibration analysis, thermography, and shaft alignment.
- Support maintenance planning, purchase orders, and reliability improvement initiatives.
Qualifications: Critical Utilities Technician I
- High School Diploma or equivalent required.
- Technical training or certification in boiler operations, mechanical systems, industrial maintenance, or a related field preferred.
- Experience operating boiler systems, critical utilities, or industrial equipment preferred.
- Basic knowledge of steam, water, compressed air, and utility system operations.
- Mechanical aptitude including troubleshooting, repairs, welding, fabrication, and machine shop practices.
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints, schematics, and technical documentation.
- Familiarity with SAP CMMS and Microsoft Office applications preferred.
- Understanding of GMP, safety, and PPE requirements.
- Ability to work independently and respond to facility and utility system needs.
Critical Utilities Technician II
- High School Diploma or equivalent required.
- Site-required licenses and certifications necessary to operate assigned utility systems.
- Boiler Operator Class 3 license (or equivalent) required where applicable.
- Boiler Operator Class 2 license, Water Treatment certification, or related trade certifications preferred.
- 5+ years of experience in utilities, boiler operations, water treatment, wastewater systems, or a related technical field preferred.
- Experience operating and maintaining critical GMP utility systems including boiler, cooling tower, purified water, wastewater, compressed air, and clean steam systems.
- Working knowledge of water treatment processes, water chemistry, and system performance monitoring.
- Experience in pharmaceutical, biotechnology, or other regulated manufacturing environments preferred.
- Industrial plumbing, pipefitting, and WFI system experience preferred.
- Proficiency with SAP CMMS, documentation practices, and Microsoft Office applications.
- Strong troubleshooting, problem-solving, communication, and compliance skills.
Critical Utilities Technician III
- High School Diploma or equivalent required.
- Boiler Operator Class 1 license (or equivalent certification) preferred or required based on site and regulatory requirements.
- 5-7+ years of experience in utilities, boiler operations, water treatment, maintenance, or a related technical field preferred.
- Demonstrated expertise in advanced troubleshooting, diagnostics, and root cause analysis.
- Experience utilizing predictive maintenance technologies including vibration analysis, thermography, and shaft alignment.
- Expert knowledge of critical utility systems including steam, water, compressed air, and related infrastructure.
- Experience supporting maintenance planning, purchase orders, reliability programs, and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Strong understanding of GMP, environmental, safety, and regulatory requirements.
- Advanced SAP CMMS proficiency and ability to analyze system performance data.
- Strong leadership, communication, and cross-functional collaboration skills.
Physical & Environmental Requirements (All Levels)
- Ability to meet vision requirements, including corrected near-point vision and color deficiency testing.
- Respirator clearance required.
- Work in GMP manufacturing, utilities, mechanical, and facilities environments.
- Exposure to utility systems, steam, heat, noise, chemicals, mechanical equipment, and varying environmental conditions.
